Ethnic identityThe SelfSocial psychology focuses on the interactions with other people so the self is an important aspect of it. It is always in social situations- “Symbol-using social being who can reflect on his or her own behavior.”- Self as the subject vs. self as the objectSubject part of the self (I) our awareness of our own experiences (things that we perceive around us as it is happening)- Self awareness: where we are and how we are interacting- Self regulation: regulating impulses and behaviorsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Object part of the self (ME): focuses on how you are view by others- Self concept: theory about ourselves- Self esteem: evaluation of our self concept (if we did something good our self esteem would rise) also has to do with self presentation which is how we present ourselves to the outside world, how we fit into group dynamicsSelf-Awareness: must have this to create your self-concept- Not something we are born with but takes time to develop in early childhood (the rouge test) young children are not aware of themselves if they look at themselves in a mirror- Anterior cingulated cortex in the frontal lobe- Self awareness can be disrupted (if we get attacked self awareness takes time so it is not good for situations of immediate stress)- We can see example of self awareness in other specieso Elephants have theory of mind: the ability to see ourselves how others see usPublic and private self-awareness- Public self awareness are things that are visible to other people concerning our behaviors and or appearance (how others see is)- Private self awareness is the awareness of our thought or feelings that can’t be visible ot others- Self-consciousness: is the tendency to engage in one or both of these two types of awareness (you could be equal or high in one than the other different people have different combinations) could also vary depending on the situating eg. if your at church you might be more publicly self aware then if your by yourself- Very much so influenced by ones cultureSelf-Regulation: like a muscle it can get tired (if you find yourself self regulating your self all day then it can be harder to self regulate later on) Glucose is important for management of neuro networks- To have control over our own actions- This also requires self awareness- Helps us delay gratifications so we don’t act on every impulse that we want to satisfy right awaySelf Concept: theory about ourselves (sense of self)- Many self-aspects: based on the roles we play eg. We might be a parents and a student.- Different qualities define different aspects for example (in your personal life you might be an introvert but you job might require you to be more outgoing)- Sometimes there is over lapse though it varies from one per5osn to the next- Aspects can also conflict with each other (you may see a friend who you are introverted with and then see them at work)Influences on self-concept- Cultureo Independent success at an individual level) vs. interdependent selves (success at he group level) o “Events can override cultural tendencies” eg. 9/11 people remember where they were and came together o biculturalist: in between different cultures (Americans living over sees there culture may not be the main culture or there views are mixed)- Gendero Self concept of gender develops at early ages of three or four (what is it like to male and what does this mean)- Ethnic
