Displaces Native Americans who have been born there much earlier- Stories of Virginia Dareo Only thing we know is she was borno Now, she is a product of Commercialization Ex: Virginia Dare wine, on the US Stamp (symbol of official memory)Lost Colony Theory of Lumbee Indians of NC- In 1885, McMillian said that Indians were descendants of England’s “Lost Colony” who intermarried an Algonquian woman- Tradition is proved through looks- Appeal of intermarriageo Whites weren’t exterminated by Native Americans because so good looking- This theory denies whites destruction and makes it seem that the Indians were fine with their interventionso Distorts how we actually treated Nativeso Legitamizes how whites and Indians got along—not actually truePocahontas- Indian in Virginia - History-- Born in 1595- Traditional story of her rescue of John Smith in 1607 at age 12 and her relationship with him - At 17, abducted by Captain Argall and held captive- At 18, converted to Christianity- Now can marry john rolfe in 1614 and birth of their son Thomas in 1615. (now goes by name Rebecca Smith)- Her trip to England in 1616 with Rolfe visited King/Queen. Celebrated as American Princess- Died in England at 21 and buried in LondonStory of Pocahontas- Climax- when she rescued John Smith from murder by her own father- Official memory- statues in US Capital building today- In paintings, she looks older than 12o Allows romance- Given lots of respect and able to stop her fathers club from hurting smitho Would this really happen?- She is Christianized in paintingso Bowing to white priesto Useable Useful of original memory because her story accepts European Culture, Princess and her royalty legitimizes story English Ownership of the land deemed
