In our study of art history, we will emphasize the recognition and identification of major works of art produced in the mediums of painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as the associated styles from each period. We will work to gain a contextual understanding of what these examples of art and architecture reveal about the cultures and societies that produced them. This is a great resource with videos and written entries about the styles, periods, techniques, and specific works of art we discuss in this class. Grading:The final course grade will be calculated from four exams, which will be given throughout the semester (dates included in the lecture schedule). All exams are weighted equally (25%) and are REQUIRED. I will offer NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. Failure to take a scheduled exam on the scheduled dates will result in a grade of “0” for that exam.Your final grade and exams will be calculated on a ten-point scale. Please note the following: grades of 90-100 are “As”, 80-89 are “Bs”, 70-79 are “Cs”, 60-69 are “Ds”, and anything below a 60 is considered a failing grade in this class.Exams will be in multiple-choice format. It is your responsibility to bring a gradeIT sheet and pencil to the exam. The exam will include questions about specific works of art, questions about materials and patronage, unknown image identification, and general questions about the history of each period we study. Questions will be drawn from the lecture material, readingassignments, and information on Blackboard; so, doing your required reading and attending class on a regular basis are essential for obtaining a passing grade in this course. Attendance and Class Policy:Class attendance is your responsibility. If you are absent from class, I will not provide copies of my personal notes. The only acceptable excuses for absences are illness, which will need to be verified in writing by your doctor, and attending a university function (i.e. conference, athletics, etc.), which will also need to be verified in writing by the dean, faculty member or coach supervising the function.2Always arrive on time: class will begin precisely at 10:00 am.
