ARTH 103 COURSE SYLLABUS SEC 001, Tuesday, 7:00-9:45 PM, 3.00 HRS SURVEY OF WESTERN ART: PREHISTORIC TO GOTHIC ART SPRING 2015 !INSTRUCTOR: John Hebble Buford House 922 W. Franklin Street Office Hours: After class, and by appointment E-mail: [email protected] !COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will survey the major art styles, periods, movements, and trends through Western art history from roughly 30,000 BCE to 1,400 CE. Art, including painting, sculpture, and architecture, will be analyzed within the context of the societies, cultures, and regions in which they were produced. Emphasis will be placed on the process of Visual Analysis, and students will be encouraged to refine their skills through the recognition and identification of various techniques, regional and cultural styles, and common themes found in the art of the early Western world. !COURSE INFORMATION AND IMPORTANT DATES: Meeting Time: 01/12/15-05/02/15, Tuesday 7:00-9:45 PM, Oliver Hall—Physical Sciences 1031 !Blackboard site: www.blackboard.vcu.edu Note: A copy of the syllabus and other important course information is available on blackboard. Cothran. Art: A Brief History, 5th Edition, 2012. ISBN: 100205017029 !!1If you are reading from a different edition, it is your responsibility to insure that your information corresponds to that of the required edition. Copies of this text are available from the VCU campus bookstore at 1111 W. Broad Street. If you decide to purchase the text online, please use the ISBN to ensure that you obtain the correct text. The assigned readings for this course are REQUIRED. !Note: If you will be taking the other half of this course (ARTH 104) in a later term, please note that you should retain your textbook for that course. This is a combined volume that is being used for both ARTH 103 and ARTH 104. !GRADING: The final course grade will be calculated from three exams, which will be given throughout the semester (dates included in the lecture schedule), quizzes, and a visual analysis journal. !All exams are weighted equally (see chart below) and are REQUIRED. I will offer NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. Failure to take a scheduled exam on the scheduled dates will result in a grade of “0” for that exam. !There will be 7 quizzes throughout the semester, out of which the 5 highest grades will be counted. I will offer NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. Failure to attend class on the day of a quiz will result in a “0” for that quiz. !All students will be required to complete a Visual Analysis (VA) journal. Students should go to local museums or galleries (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Visual Arts Center of Richmond, The Depot, etc.) to view works which they find interesting or compelling. The journal will consist of 3 one-to-two-page typed (double spaced) entries analyzing chosen works of art or architecture using the methods outlined in class. Further instructions will be given in the beginning of the semester. !Your final grade and exams will be calculated on a percentage scale, with a maximum possible score of 200/200 (100%). Please note the following: grades of 90-100% are “As”, 80-89% are “Bs”, 70-79% are “Cs”, 60-69% are “Ds”, and anything below a 60% is considered a failing grade in this class. !Quizzes ____/25 Exam 1 ____/50 Exam 2 ____/50 Exam 3 ____/50 VA Journal ____/25 !TOTAL ____/200 !2!Exams will be a combination of multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer. It is your responsibility to bring a pen or pencil to the exam. The exam will include unknown image identification, questions about specific works of art, questions about materials and patronage, and general questions about the history of each period we study. Questions will be drawn from the lecture material, reading assignments, and information on Blackboard; so, doing your required reading and attending class on a regular basis are essential for obtaining a passing grade in this course. !ATTENDANCE AND CLASS POLICIES: Class attendance is your responsibility. If you are absent from class, I will not provide copies of my personal notes. The only acceptable excuses for absences are illness, which will need to be verified in writing by your doctor, and attending a university function (i.e. conference, athletics, etc...), which will also need to be verified in writing by the dean, faculty member or coach supervising the function. !Always arrive on time: class will begin precisely at 7:00 PM. If you are late, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Also, please try to be as courteous as possible and not disrupt the class. !Cell phones must be turned off during the lectures. On exam days, the use of all electronic devices (cell phones, iPods/iPads, dictionaries, laptops, etc…) is strictly prohibited. !Except on exam days, you may use laptops, tablets, and digital recorders to assist in note taking. !Food and drinks are allowed, within reason. Please be mindful of your classmates, and do not bring in anything that would be particularly disruptive. !In case of inclement weather always check the VCU website first.
