The UN DecidesVIII. Was It Fair? Zionist ViewsIX. Was It Fair? Arab ViewsLecture: I. Overview1939: Zionist movement was stalled, as well as immigration. After WWII, Jewish growth resumedquickly. 1948, Israel was established. Why did WWII have such a dramatic affect?War weakened Arabs and Great Britain. Strengthened the Jews, Soviet Union, and United States. II. Impact on ArabsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.StrengthsDuring WWII, the Arabs were loyal to Great Britain so this was beneficial. In order to keep access to oil, Britain had to listen to the Palestinian Arabs. WeaknessesThe War hurt the Arabs because many Palestinian leaders (Haj Amin al-Husayni) became close with Germany (Hitler). Wanted answers from Hitler to help get rid of the Jews. Many Arabs celebrated Nazi accomplishments. However, they were necessarily "friends", business relationships. Problem was, the rest of the world knew about this relationship. The war hurt the Arabs because of continued fragmentation of the Arab organizations. III. Impact on Arabs' Patron, UK-Arab's patron, Britain. WWII bankrupted Britain…but they needed to keep getting oil, so they had to keep a good relationship with Arab countries. At the same time, Britain also had to lean of the US for economic support. Their relationship with the US was more important than their relationship with the Arabs. Poverty forced Britain to become "America's sidekick", so couldn't support Arabs. IV. Impact on Jews-The Nazi's murdered over 6 mil Jews. Despite this, the Holocaust was good for Zionism. Most western Jews shared only modest interest in Jews, while the poor Jews in Eastern Europe strongly adhered to it. After WWII however, every Jew had strong interest in Zionism. Germany wasn't the only players in the Holocaust. From this, Jews concluded they couldn't count on anyone but themselves. Only in a state of their own will Jews be accepted. Zionist Organization-Biltmore Movement: after hearing about the Holocaust they called for a completely Jewish state. Zionist orgs started appearing everywhere, and this idea became prominent in the US (since they had largest population of Jews). 1948: raised 100 million for Israel. Jews in Palestine started attacking the British because they didn't allow Jewish immigration into Palestine before and after the war; they view Britain as an accomplice to genocide.A number of terrorist groups, Irgun -- Menachim Begin. They had many acts of violence against the British; Jews were now in open revolt against the British. Greatest benefit: dramatic increase in world sympathy. Before WWII, Jews thought they had no one. But even after, most of the support they receive was fueled by guilt. V. Impact on Jews' Patrons, USSR and USA-Increase in sympathy in SU. Before WWII, SU showed no love for Zionism. But after they lost so many people due to the Nazis, they became closer to the Zionist. USSR dominated Eastern Europe…if Stalin had opposed the creation of Israel, it never would have come about because of the amount of # of votes they had in the UN. Coexisted with power American backing. This was thought to be pretty hard because the USSR and US never agreed on anything. Pres. Harry Truman (after FDR), believed God promised Israel its formation. Opposed by foreign policy. Backed by Zionist, all Africa American leaders (Powell), Jews, and left wing liberals. Truman was instrumental in getting UN in voting for a Jewish state (1948: formation of Israel). WWII weakened Palestinians, Great Britain. While it strengthen the Zionist, the USSR, and US. VI. UK QuitsUS still didn't want a large number of Jews. But even so, most Jewish survivors said that they would only go to Palestine anyway. Over 50,000 tried to run the British blockade…1000 drowned, 4000 made it throughThe Exodus 1947: "the Germans killed our families, don't kill our dreams". Tried to fight them physically on the boat…British ended up taking over the boat. When they got to Germany, the Jews had to be forced off the boat. This small incident speaks to why so many view the British as insensitive and wrong in this matter.Feb. 1947: British were ready to give up. Ended control over British returned Palestine Mandate to UN. VII. The UN DecidesThe UN went to Palestine to investigate. Minority report: single state for Jews and Palestine. Majority report: only answer is partition, supported by 3. Supported by 8 members. Arab state in 45% of Mandate (45,000 Arabs 10,000 Jews). Jewish state in 55% (540,000 Jews 40,000 Arabs). Jerusalem-international zone. Result: did receive 2/3 votes in favor. Why did they support a Jewish state:Jews are more familiar in the West, unlike Arabs. Western support for the Jews was reinforced by guilt from Holocaust. Arab states failed to organize an effective lobby. Many decided on the merits: choice between greater and lesser evils. Injustice to the Palestinians is more tolerable than further injustice to the Jews. May 14, 1948-Israel declared their independence. VIII. Was It Fair? Zionist ViewsThe Jewish connection to Palestine was ancient and continuous. Although they got 55%, Jews got less than 25% of good cultivatable land. 1945: no place besides Palestine where Jewish survivors could go. Palestinian behavior in WWII reduced their claims to sympathy. No relationship to Holocaust, their WWII relationship with the Nazis didn't make them look good. Jewish entry into Palestine was just and legal. All land was sold by Arab land owners at high prices. UN is voice of humanity. The world decided that Jews have suffered enough, and a country in their ancient homelands. They've also never sought to reverse the 1947 decision.Zionist believe Israel is one of the world most legitimate countries because the world (the UN) voted on the formation of this state. IX. Was It Fair? Arab ViewsHaving their own state entitled Jews to enter and occupy the country. 1880, 6% of Palestinian population…increased exponentially overtime. Jews were able to enter after 1920, only because British were in military control; mass alien invasion. Why should Palestinians have to reap the results on anti-Semitism. They had to pay the price was not because
