How is current social media becoming MORE “social” than traditional social media?Current LectureI. Music and Social Media:Lilly Allen: One of the first artists that were capable of gaining popularity through social media without any influence from the music industry/record labels.- Used Myspace to gain followers which led to her popularitySusan Boyle: A woman that appeared on Britain’s Got Talent and widely known from her video that shocked the nation- Britain’s Got Talent manipulated, in a way, the situation of Susan Boyle, being that she was an older woman that one would not expect to sing so beautifully as she did- They took this to their advantage to make the story more shocking- it was shared on all types of social media being viewed 8 million views due to this surprise effectThe big picture here can be concluded that now, more than ever, we are more than just consumers of information from the web. We have the power the control what is shared and ultimately becomes of popular interest.II. Network Culture:Network Culture is a new societal condition that is arising among the world today through social media sites and the web in general.-Network Culture consists of three main features:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Public Literacy: The ability to use language, numbers, images, along with other means to further understand and interact with the current culture movement towards social media.- More contact through social media: People are becoming more engaged with other people through social media than they have in the past without it.-It is more common than ever for people to pull out their phones throughout the day and be involved with what is happening online.- Normalization: People no longer feel the need to feel embarrassed or weird about engaging on online and sharing posts on social media sites.III. How is current social media becoming MORE “social” than traditional social media?The answer to this question does not involve an argument of social vs. asocial, but merely that it is becoming more social.-In other words, people are interacting more frequently with each other than they have in the past. The answer can be answered with the 5 C’s:- Choice: People are in control of making their own decision of what type of mediathey want to view and are finding it for themselves.- Conversation: Social media sites today have granted users the ability to communicate and share in ways that other traditional media sites have not been able to succeed at.- Curation: People are capable of being their own filters or filers as they organize and label social media information on their own. - Creation: Social media today provides an array of tool and different ways for people to create what they want to create whether individually or together and share it with society.- Collaboration: It is becoming more common for people to come together to create something on social media, even when there is no real personal gain
