Science has literally changed the world in many waysThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Research Terms- Variable- the element of the experiment that can vary (what we are interested in)- Data- any information gathered having to do with the variable (mostly quantitative)- Population- total number of people we are interested in eg. Students at BGSU- Sample- the number of people we are actually testing eg. Sophomore BGSU studentsThe 6 steps to Research1. Ask a question or identify a problem2. Form a hypothesis 3. Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment or some form of research4. Analyze the data5. Evaluate the data and come to a conclusion. (Was your hypothesis right or wrong?)6. Document everything! Write what you did down and tell other peopleCollecting DataIt is common in psychology to measure what can’t be seen- Self-reports- things like surveys or questioners were a person answers questions about themselves.o There are problems with these however because people can lie to make themselves look better.- Other-reports-asking another person to talk about the person you arstidyingo People can also want to make there friends look good so there is still the possibility of dishonesty- Objective measures- (Things that can be seen or measured) eg.
