4/15/14Hip Hop- Dominant cultureo The established language, religion, values, rituals, and social customs. These traitsare often the norm for the society as a whole- Subcultureo Not widely accepted or understood by the masses; a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger cultureo Ex: Indie Music- Mainstream Cultureo Culture that is accepted by the majority of people in society; not challengedo Ex: Pop Music, Hip Hop In the 70s hip hop was still seen as subcultural- Robert Moseso Offended wealthy people by bringing less wealthy people into their “playground” Built Highway 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway)- Had to kick people out of their homes to build- Community devastation because of the physical barrier being put in neighborhoods in the Bronx - Neighborhoods were devalued and ghettos were created- Strategy so property could be bought at a cheaper value Used his power in the government to do this - Breakdancingo Amongst all of the gang violence, became a positive way to express this violence- 5 Pillars to Hip Hopo BBoying The dance component; physical response  Dance during instrumental parts or breaks in recordo MCing:  master of ceremony Guided party, hype man Eventually became the rapper during break sectiono DJing Disc jockey Used turn tables Made mixed tapes o Graphic Art/ Graffiti The art of using spray paint/paint to beautify the neighborhood Not tagging (what gangs use to mark territory) Never done on someone else’s property because that is vandalismo Knowledge Hip Hop is a positive response to a negative situation Understanding that the people within the culture have about the culture- 80so RUN DMC Brought together by Russell Simmons Brought 5 pillars together- Logo represents the graphic arts pillar Adidas- Adi Dassler o German who stared Adidaso His brother started Puma- RUN DMC brought brand back to mainstream culture “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith- One of 1st hip hop crossovers into mainstream music- Adidas appeared in the video- Hip hop began to connect itself with other art forms Solidified hip hop as a mainstream art formo MC Hammer (1989) Controversial because a man was dancing - 90so Hip hop attacked R&B Two became almost synonymous o Salt N Peppa Dancers began to appear on stageo West Coast Rap vs. East Coast Hip Hop West Coast- Negative response to a negative situation- Got nickname “gangsta
