England and Henry VIII- Spain: First Country, VERY Rich and Powerful- Had gold and silver (did not invest, spent it instead)- England chose not to explore (instead, sold manufactured goods to Spain who in turn gave them the goods found while exploring)o 1550: Trade between England and Spain Collapses (Glutted the market)- English Economy Collapsed- Employment Decrease- Beggars, Homeless- Food Shortage- Population increased from 3 million to 5 million before the crash (This caused even worse conditions after the crash)o 1550: Henry VIII dies (Political and Religious Unrest)- Henry VIII (The spare, not heir)- Brother, Arthur was supposed to be king (heir) but dies leaving Henry as king First Wife: Catherine of Aragon (Spanish Princess and his deceasedbrother’s wife) Has a daughter, Mary, but unable to have any more children Henry divorced her after breaking away from the Catholic Church because he needed a son (heir) to the throne.- Church of England (Anglican and Protestant) Second Wife: Anne Boleyn Has a daughter, Elizabeth (No sons) Accused of adultery (treason), beheaded Third Wife: Jane Seymour Had a son, Edward (Sickly Child) Died due to an infection from childbirth Fourth Wife: Anne of Cleves Blindly married Henry Henry divorced her shortly after marriage Fifth Wife: Catherine Howard 14 years old Flirty adulteress Beheaded just like her cousin, Anne Boelyn Sixth Wife: Catherine Karr  Survived, outlived Henry- Edward Takes over the throne- Sickly, dies shortly- Mary: Next in Line- Secretly Catholic - Protestantism vs. Catholicism - Named “Bloody Mary” due to the murders of Protestants that refused to convert to Catholicism - Married the King of Spain (First Cousin)- No children, dies- Elizabeth 1st (Protestant)- Killed Catholics that would not convert to Protestantism - England in deep economic depression - Needed to explore to colonize, but England was broke- Created joint-stock companies (Corporation) Limited Liability Combine money (only lost what you invested if failed, gained more if successful)- Sir Walter Raleigh - In charge of finding a place to colonize1. Close to Spain so they could observe it2. Pirates; hide from Spain and raid their shipsII. Roanoke - Founded by Sir Walter Raleigh- In North Carolina o 1585: First English Settlement- Young Aristocrats- Military- Released Prisoners- ALL Meno 1587: Second Expedition - 110 People, Families- Drop Off and Return Policy - Spain and England go to waro 1590: Ship finally returns to Roanoke (3 years later) - Colony Abandoned- King James - Charters joint-stock company- Virginia Company of London - Wants Profits - Metals, minerals, iron, fur, pitch, tar, lumber, and sassafras- Convert Indians to Christianity (This would make them more willing to trade)- Patriotism o 1607: Arrive in Jamestown (105 men)III. Jamestown (1607)- No Women until Fall of 1608- John Smith- Martial Law- Work 5 hrs/day (Summer) and 3 hrs/day (Winter)- Powhatan - Wants Guns - Jamestown Colonists want corn o 1609-1610: Winter, Starving Times- Jamestown colonists burnt Native American’s corn supply when they refused to give them enough due to a bad harvest - Population decreased from 500 to 60 - Some resorted to cannibalism- Some fled to Native Americans so they would not starve with the colony- De La Ward - Wanted to punish those who fled, but Indians would not give them the colonists- As a result, took Native American hostages (two children and one woman)and killed them o 1607-1616 (Fiasco)o 1616: Edward Sandys (New CEO of the VA Company)- Wanted to give each original settler 100 acres of land and each new settlers 50 acres per each erson brought to Jamestown (Private Property)- John Rolfe (Sot Weed = Tobacco)- Medicine- Recreational Drug - Helped make Jamestown
