AMCULT 208 1st Edition Lecture 1Current LectureWhy does he teach this course?was in band, gig in Fillmore in NY with band, first curator to rock n roll hall of fame, knewa lot of the beats, was a hippie Why are we here?empowerment and the ability to define yourselfbeats: response, post WWII post depression culturehippies: all this commercialism and consumerism, war, civil rights stufpunks:counterculture is just an attempt to find yourself by being apart from and unique from mainstream societyall tried to define themselves bc they didn’t want anyone else to define themdespite time diferences, people use the same modalities to create their cultures, have a ton in common, way that they tried to define themselves by using traditionPASSIONhaving the passion to live your life the way it should be livedexternal expression of your internal conviction• belief system, the fiber of what you are all about• this internal experience that is almost indescribable but you cannot live unless you have that thing in you• “i don’t know any other way to live” you don’t have a choiceLearningThere are two ways of learning• learning what u need to know to do something, learn stuf• learning how to live (that is what this class is about)◦ what does it mean to live, u can exist, but u can also liveHow Does Culture Work?1. CONTACT2. discernment/identification: what is this, who is this, going to try to identify what you’re having contact with3. feeling: after you identify what it is, what do you feel about it, like it, don’t like it, or ambivalence4. intention: create some sort of intention5. action: you end up acting on your intentionthen u make another contactBasic TermsEthnocentrism: the belief that your culture does things “right” and anyone who difers from you is wrong and probably needs to be correctedCultural Relativity: not the idea that all cultures are equal to each other, but rather that every culture must be evaluated in its own content, not in comparison to ours or anyoneelse’sStyle: very important concept, form of ethnocentrism.. style is the outward manifestation of… substanceSubstance: how much, and what kind of meaning is inherent in the things we do STYLE and SUBSTANCE are ALWAYS in a constant state of negotiation in everything we do.History: “the story of the political elite”Historicity: this is a term coined by one of Bruce’s mentors, the late historian Richard Mercer Dorson, who used it to describe the story of everybody else not covered by historyComparative Analysis: simply the idea o comparing one thing to anotherWith regards to this class you will be expected to keep a chart that you will use in discussion sections that will compare each group as to style, substance, and contextCultural Materialism: describes when the material factors of a culture serve as the causes of sociocultural diferences between that culture and
