I. Introductory Lecture on Measurements – cont.I. Motions of the SkyII. StarsIII. ProcessionIV. Astrology vs. AstronomyI. Motions of the Skya. Half of the Earth is ALWAYS lit by the Suni. Earth is not exactly a sphereb. DIFFERENT parts of Earth are lit by the Sun because the Earth spinsi. Light always comes from the leftc. The rising and setting of the stars is the effect of Earth’s rotationi. You see different parts of the sky at different times of the yearii. The Sun appears to move through a fixed set of constellations over a year1. The apparent path of the Sun is called the ecliptic2. Zodiac: constellations along the eclipticII. Starsa. Faint stars together give impression of a bandb. You can see about 3,000 stars in sky with naked eyei. Stars are distributed randomlyii. Human brain picks up patterns, which is why constellations exist and helps humans locate starsiii. Stars are at different distances from each other1. They are not physically related to each otherc. Asterism vs. Constellationsi. Asterism: recognizable dot-to-dot patterns of stars, used to navigate through the skyii. Constellation: one of 88 sections in the sky (each section is a constellation)d. Fact: the Big Dipper is part of “Ursen Minor,”III. Procession: Earth spins like a topa. Procession describes the “top like” rotation of the Earthi. The Sun and the Moon influence Earth, so that there is a slight tug on Earth from both entities, causing procession1. Similar to a tug of war, except the Earth isn’t being pulled linearly back and forth, but in a circleb. The significance of procession is that the north point of Earth’s axis is facing Polaris, the North Star. But in 13000 years, the north point of the axis will face Vega, which will be our new North Star.i. It takes 36,000 years for a full procession, where after Vega, Polaris will once again be our North Star.ii. Procession causes constellations to reverse1. The whole zodiac will shift as well because of this phenomenaIV. Astrology vs. Astronomya. There is absolutely no connection between planets and their alignment to us.b. Astrology is merely for entertainment purposesASTRON 89 1st Edition Lecture 3Outline of Last Lecture I. Introductory Lecture on Measurements – cont. Outline of Current Lecture I.
