Topics we will cover include the following:Exam 1: sampling techniques, levels of measurement, presentation of data, measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion Exam 2: probability, properties of the normal curve, z-scores and confidence intervalsExam 3: hypothesis tests for 1 population, directional and non-directional hypothesis tests, chi-square goodness of fit test and chi-square test of independenceExam 4: hypothesis tests for 2 populations (independent and matched samples) and ANOVAExam 5: bivariate regression and multivariate regressionTextbook:There is NO textbook for this course.Clickers:We will be using “clickers” in class. Please purchase a Response Card LCD either at the bookstore or from an online vendor, such as IU Bookstore Online or the Turning Point store. (For Turning Point, go to https://store.turningtechnologies.com/ Our IUB School code is 0BjE - note that the first digit is a zero and that the j is lowercase.) If you have a Response Card without the LCD screen from another class, that is also acceptable, however you may not use an application for your phone or ipad. Once you purchase your clicker, go to the Turning Point icon on our class Oncourse site and follow the directions to register your device. If you replace your clicker over the course of the semester, you will need to re-register and notify me immediately so that I can update our class participant list; if you do not notify me prior to class meetings, your clicker points will not be counted. Course Requirements:Attendance:Consistent attendance at all class meetings, including discussion sections, is expected and essential to your success in this course. Students who have not been consistently attending both lecture and discussion, as demonstrated by clicker participation, homework credit and other appropriate modes of tracking attendance, will not be allowed to schedule appointments for tutoring with the instructor and may be turned away from tutoring during AI office hours unless their absences result from legitimate, documented circumstanceswhich were brought to the attention of the instructor or AI at the time the absence occurred. Optional Homework for Extra Credit:There will be 10 homework assignments over the course of the semester; homework due dates are noted on the schedule. Homework assignments will be posted to Oncourse several days before the due date. Completion of homework assignments is optional but strongly recommended. Students who turn in their homework in class on the scheduled date (no homework will be accepted late, outside of class, or via a 3rd party) will have their homework returned with a copy of the answers at their next discussion section. One point of extra credit will be assigned to those students who make a reasonable attempt to complete the assignment accurately, who turn it in during the Wednesday lecture, and who pick up their homework and answer sheet in their Friday discussion section. Correcting the homework problems, using the provided answer sheet, is the student’s responsibility. Answer sheets will not be provided to any student who does not turn in the completed homework assignment. Exams:There will be 5 exams, including a non-cumulative final; exam dates are noted on the course schedule. Each exam will be worth 20 points. Make-up exams will not be permitted except under circumstances of extreme medical emergency; any make-up exam arrangement must be made within 24 hours of the scheduled exam time. Students who qualify for specialtesting accommodations are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this but must see me or their AI immediately as we are required to finalize those arrangements several weeks prior to the first exam.Grading:Clickers Points:Multiple clicker points are available in conjunction with clicker questions posed during lectures. For each clicker question, students who answer will receive 2 points for a correct answer and 1 point for an incorrect answer. Clicker points will be totaled at the end ofthe semester. Students will be awarded between 0 and 4 points of extra credit based on how many of the total points available which they earned. Students who earn 75 percent or more of all possible points will be awarded 4 points of extra credit, students who earn between 50 and 75 percent of the available points will be awarded 3 points of extra credit, etc. No clickerpoints will be given for days when students are absent, attended class without a clicker, or attended with a non-working or unregistered clicker. Students are allowed and encouraged to confer with other nearby students as part of the process of working out the solutions to clicker questions, however students must never submit a clicker response for another student or request other students to submit a clicker response for them. Clicker dishonesty will be treated like all other types of academic dishonesty and will be punished with loss of all clicker related extra credit as well as reported to university officials which may result in serious penalties (see below section on academic integrity). Course Grades:Over the course of the semester, 114 points are available from the combination ofexams and extra credit (e.g., homework and clickers – no additional extra credit opportunitieswill be allowed). Course grades will be assigned based on the student’s point total with no rounding up included. Plus-minus grading will be used as follows: 97+=A+, 93-96=A, 90-92=A-, 87-89=B+... 60-62=D-, <60 = failing. All grades will be posted to Oncourse throughout the semester except clicker extra credit which will not be posted until it is totaled after the last lecture (though students are welcome to email the instructor with a request to begiven their clicker total at any point throughout the semester). Please keep track of your grades as they are posted on-line.
