How to setup SQL Developer and Connect to a Database 1) Go to: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html and download the appropriate version of SQL Developer 3.0 for your computer. You will be asked to accept the license agreement first (top of page)! a. If you use a 32-bit Windows XP machine, it is highly recommended to download the first choice, “Oracle SQL Developer for 32-bit Windows (This zip file includes the JDK1.6.0_11)” b. If you use any other version, you will need to install the latest version of the Java Development Kit (JDK) for that version. For example, “Oracle SQL Developer for 64-bit Windows (This zip does not include a JDK)” does NOT have the necessary version of JDK for running SQL Developer. Note: in the instructions for downloading other versions, follow these instructions precisely: i. To install and run: - Ensure you have a JDK installed, if not, download here (or get details from your hardware vendor) - Download the file above - Extract sqldeveloper.zip into any folder, using folder names - Within that folder, open the sqldeveloper folder - Double-click sqldeveloper.exe ii. Not the word “here” in the first step. YOU MUST INSTALL JAVA BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL SQLDEVELOPER!! 2) You will be asked for your Oracle ID and password. If you do not have one, and most of you will not, sign-up for an Oracle ID and password. On the screens requiring your personal information, you MUST use an .edu domain email address when asked.. This will get you free copies of Oracle products. Also, make sure you uncheck any newsletter checkboxes if you do not want to receive Oracle junk email. 3) Regardless of the version of SQLDeveloper you’ve installed, the first time you attempt to start it, you will receive the dialog box in figure 1 below. You need to use the Browse button to find the …\JDKversionNumber\bin\java.exe file. Figure 1 - Locating the latest JDK - Java.exe file 4) Also, as part of the first time you run SQL Developer, you’ll see the series of checkboxes shown in figure 2 below. Check off the first choice, “SQL Source (.sql)” and click OK.Figure 2 - Choose the SQL Source selection 5) Close SQL Developer and restart your computer. Before attempting to connect to a database, you MUST start a VPN connection first. If you don’t have this software, GSU students may download it and install it from http://www.gsu.edu/ist/software/connecting-to-secure-servers.html. (see figure 3 for starting the VPN connection). Note that you can start SQL Developer, but will not be able to connect to a database unless the VPN is started first. Figure 3 - Starting a VPN connection6) If you have not already done so, start Oracle SQL Developer. There will NOT be an entry in your start menu. You must go to the directory in which you chose to unzip the program files and click on SQLDeveloper.exe. Be careful, there will be a sub-directory called SQL Developer under the location of the .exe file. You do NOT want to use this sub-directory. 7) Once started, there should be a “Connections” icon as shown in figure 4 below. Right click on this icon can choose “New Connection.” Figure 4 - Creating a new connection 8) Fill out the screen below for each new connection you make. For example, in figure 5 below, a connection with the name “Oracle” was created to link to the sample account (userid bgates) which will be used in all classroom demonstrations. The account name “Oracle” is arbitrary. You could call it “Class Demo” or any other name which makes sense. You will have more than one connections…you will have one for the bgates class demonstration account and another for your own personal account. The Connection Name can be whatever you want to call it to distinguish it from the bgates account. The Username is the first letter of your first name and full last name. E.g., my username would be “dmcdonald” (no quotes, not case sensitive). Your password for your user account is your student ID without any of the preceding zeros. E.g. a student ID “000123456” would be an Oracle ID “123456.” The Hostname for any account setup will always be “oracle.cis.gsu.edu.” The Port will always be “1521” and the SID needs to be set to “stuisDB” (no quotes).Figure 5 - Creating a new connection 9) Click on the “Test” button. If you have successfully connected to the database (remember, YOU MUST HAVE A VPN CONNECTION STARTED FIRST), you will see the “Success” message just above the Help button (see figure 6). If you are on your home computer, you will now have a connection listed with whatever Connection Name you provided in step 8 above.
