Dr. Vaughan talked about an article that suggested that soda might cause your risk to cancer to increase. We determined that the article did not prove anything due to causation. Sometimes scientists are more interested in selling things versus actually proving things. Be careful what you read and do your research. General Chemistry- Non-polar covalent bonds are atoms that share electrons equally. Polar covalent bonds have a charge associated with it because the electrons shared between the two atoms are unequal. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- The polar covalent bonds within water molecules result in hydrogen bonds. These are relatively weak bonds, individually. IF there are a lot of hydrogen bonds then they become strong. - Chemical reactions are the formation or breaking of chemical bonds. The product is thedifferent arrangement of bonds. WATER AND LIFE- Chapter 3- Water becomes less dense when it’s temperature decreases, not like usual substances.- The polarity of water (polar covalent bond) of water produces hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonds hold the double helix of DNA together. - The human body (cells) is made up of 75%-90% water. Biologist worry about how it works and why is it that way. How much of that water is drinkable? A very small amount.- Because water is a polar molecule, there are partial positive regions and partial negative regions. - Four of water’s emergent properties.1. water has cohesive behavior, meaning it will stick to itself and other surfaces. 2. water is less dense when frozen than in liquid form 3. ability to moderate temp: high specific heat- water will resist changes in temp, requires a lot of energy to get it to boil. When water goes from liquid to gas it essentially cools the surface that it is evaporating from (sweat). Blood cools the body as well. 4. water is a really good solvent for molecules that have charge. - Adhesions sticks water molecules together producing surface tension. This is why water striders can walk on water. - When water freezes the molecules of water start to organize themselves and become less dense and expand. Frozen expanded water can cause damage. If water inside a human (75%-90%) freezes, it expands and disrupts the order- frostbite- water expands and breaks open the cells in the tissue and dies. - Because frozen water is less dense, it freezes from the top down, which supports marine life as opposed to vise-versa. - Heat evaporation is the amount of heat that must be absorbed to produce 1g of gas. -asolution is a homogenous liquid-asolvent is the dissolving agent-thesolute is dissolved-theaqueous solution a situation in which water is the solvent.
