Technology: Progression and Shock Current LectureTechnology, Information, and Society I. Three Great Movements in Human History a. Based off “The Third Wave” in 1980 by Alvin Toffler and “Future Shock” - Before great moment – mankind was nomadic, basically no technology curve, only focused on two basic needs- food and shelter 1) First Wave- Agrarian Revolutiono Wealth is land-fertile land (exhaustible/exclusivity) Growing food, domesticating animals Land is claimed by power or divine right Most wealth is physical and tangible can deplete (Think Dust Bowl)Exclusivity (Mason) of property - Mankind sits still, growth is possible – populations= critical mass of thinking; prior the ability to do was what mattered—tech curve starts to form Rudimentary tools become complex tools2) Second Wave- Industrial Revolutiono Wealth is land, labor and capital (diminished- not quite exhaustible, you can replace them, still exclusive) A laborer’s work is still exclusive (because its physical) Centralization and Standardizationo Assembly line, mass production -Decrease cost of production (Massification)- lack of customization, art of business, you work around the tool, the tool doesn’t work around you EX) lefty operating a righty rifle These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. Electronic adding machine first introduced in this stage- predecessor to a computer 3) Third Wave- Information Revolution o Wealth is knowledge (non-exhaustible/non-exclusive) First time wealth is intangible- can be shared and does not diminish o Demassification - EX) your tablet/laptops news feed can be customized to what you want to know—Nightly News: industrial age item , doesn’t take your preference into account- Some places unlike others does not various places people into segments or demographics problem: most of us are not generalized with our demographicso Unlike Amazon—uses specific technology, not just demographics they can pinpoint specific likes o * Ch. 2 * E-commerce- Change in what floats the boat of the world- ie) what you have isn’t nearly as important as what you know – we use technology and industry to offset the Agrarian Age- 70% of us jobs are intangible, service and information basedII. Technology: Progression and Shock a. Future Shock: inability to adjust and adapt to the changing speed of technological advancement-EX) Putting phone away in class itch to get it - 0 – 1750 AD: Tech Knowledge 2x- 1750-1890 AD: Tech Knowledge 2x- 1900-1950 AD: Tech Knowledge 2xo In last 50 years, there has been more technological progression than in the previous 10,000 years – those burn at turn of 20th century= Toffler’s 1st FS Generation EX) Dr. D’s Grandma born in 1902- main made of transportation = walking, like year 0; within 100 years (her lifetime): - Horse and Buggy/ Bike; Automobile; Mass Transit/Jets/Space Flight/Shuttles/Space Stations—80-85 years- Think about medicine, knowledge, communicationo Today: time is currency (how far is indy 1 hr) --- world doesn’t sleep anymore, world moves on, already behind when you wake up Always connected to who we want to be—problem: we don’t take advantage of
