Phenomenological Criminology:Katz:Righteous Slaughter:Humiliation: overtake the person so much and seems last forever. A wet feelingWhen a person humiliated, other people gazed, and the person felt trapped.Passion killings often occur. People experience humiliation in casual and recreational places. When a personescapes from humiliation, he feel safe, but he still feel humiliated. His humiliation is an eternal state. Righteousness: R is absolute and eternal R: demand to be defended in action. To defend R, a third experience: RageRage: mobilize the person to defend the good. Rage: have a target. Target: individual humiliation. Rage is blind, only the present moment not the future. Rage only views the present moment as if it will last forever. These experiences are sequentially.eg: Francine Huss: as an abused women, she tried to come back and abuse continued. She had enough. When herhusband forbade her schooling, she was humiliated. She poured gasoline on her husband and light it. She evolveda certain righteousness and good. The righteousness of advancing one by going to school. She is killing herhusband to defend righteousness. She was temporarily insane. “The burning bed”One step is enough to kill someone. The killer will curse the victim before assaultingCursing: defile the good. The victim is set with sin and it is blown away. The community is cleansed of sin. Victim’s body must be spilled: passion killing. Passion Killing is done transcendentally to a community.Righteous slaughter: “I don’t care about kids, I want a divorce.” In defense of family values. Degrading his wifeby calling a bitch. as Katz presents, righteous slaughter not a instrumental (rational) act not something the persondoes simply to get another person who caused him trouble out of their way we can understand---------killers notonly shoot victims once, but multiple once/not only stab once, continue shoot/stab long after the person isdead the could-be killer curses out the would-be victim---in cursing killer presents victim as being a source ofdefilement. degraded, a source of pollution the killer presents the victims as being something that pollutes thegoodAll passion killings: humiliated, defend righteousness.Shop lifting: the shop lifter: steals object he does not need. Perception: a person in the store and see some object. It would be so easy to take it and walk out. The ease of stealing something is so intensing. A devious impulsebecame an obsession. The object is simply a plot occurring in the person. These deviant impulse is not sociallyacceptable. So, shop lifter conceal socially unacceptable desires. He acts as a normal customer. But she controlherself in the selfconscious way, while experiencing the deviant experience. She took and left. Euphoria!Sometime they discard the object. Euphoria: what she achieved. Self-efficacy. Conceal deviant and anti-socialfeelings to appear normal when not feeling normal. Shop lifter: something internal achieved Rational choice theory: cancelled. Bur: live a particular life, shapes their perception of needs and society. He hada relationship to the place: he violated sacred space. He penetrated it.Katz's theory doesn't really explain crime----doesn't explain why crime flutuate---why crime rate higher in some place but show a whole another dimension in crime ------what's going on in criminal person-----not rational look inside the individual and understand the individual's experience in their criminal actcrime has moral attractionburglary (property crime)not acts of revengeburglar enters into certain kind of relationship of spacethe person experience space----(you have a special space in your room and no one else allowed to go in)other people 's private spaces are sacred burglar enter someone else's private space----violates someone else---because he is not where he is supposed to be---the place becomes magicalburglary's not trying to get objects from someone else's homeexcitement of penetrating another person's space--the thrill of burglary the person confirm having been the sacred place----mark the territory-----rearrange the furniture----confirm they were around--some burglars don't rush to steal---they will just hang out for a while----marking territory----confirm the fact the person has entered into this space-----the person's relationship with space----creates the experience behind
