Part II: Early Archaic (800-700BC)A few Greek terms:- timé  “honor” Definition: the standing of a person in society, respect due to you; only given to important people in a society; inherited/passed down; social value, what others think about you, how you are viewed; you’re worth is dependent on what others think about you. Metaphor: a trophy case on your front lawn- Kleos  “glory, fame, reputation” Definition: the things you do that others will talk about; not inherited, must be earned by oneself; public nature, good deeds only count if others see them. Metaphor: the trophies in the trophy case- Areté  “personal, inborn excellence” Definition: an aristocratic value that cannot be taught; everyone is born with some sort of excellence brought out by time and training (the Greeks don’t believe in skill)- Aristeia  “a state of being the best”Definition: a temporary display of prowess; a concentrated outbreak of areté Eg. Hulk Hogan, Pac-man- Kharis  “favor, gratitude, grace, charm”Definition: reciprocity – doing something good for someone, knowing that it will be reciprocated; a form of social cohesion- a way for the society to bond; keeps alpha male leaders from killing each other; this reciprocating only occurs between
