Using Research to Understand and Improve LearningCurrent LectureA quick 5-question short-answer quiz was given over the syllabus at the start of class. What is good teaching? Many new teachers are concerned with:- Classroom management- Motivating students- Accommodating student work- Evaluating student work- Dealing with parents- Getting along with other teachersThe new teacher is worried about their own performance in teaching, while the experienced teacher is more concerned about how the students are doing. Practice creates comfort in a classroom setting, where you can focus more on the students’ needs rather than your performance. Many students in the class said that their favorite teacher was great not so much because of their knowledge, but because of the social and emotional connection they had with that teacher. Good teaching is more than just being knowledgeable about your subject. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Characteristics of the Intentional Teacher:- Purposeful lesson plans- Motivates using creative methods- Differentiates instruction- Uses class time wisely- Teacher efficacy- Open to criticism- Ongoing assessment- Professional development- Reflective**These characteristics will be discussed in further detail in later lectures.Learning/Teaching Today:Teachers have a sense of efficacy- Efficacy is a teacher’s belief that he/she can reach difficult students to help them learn; it can predict student achievement; it grows from real success with students; experience and training are essential.o Efficacy is basically a teacher’s effectiveness and confidence that they are capable of teaching and helping each student in the class. The Role of Educational Psychology:In the beginning, educators and psychologists observed children in classrooms. Today, there is a lot of research on teaching and learning, a focus on child/adolescent development, and motivation in a classroom. Is it common sense? No, although educational psychology may seem like common sense,it is backed up by extensive research, and some common sense responses may not be best for students. Microgenetic Studies:o Study cognitive processes in the midst of change. Role of Time in Research- short-term studies are easier to conduct, but some changes cannot be seen in a short amount of time, but longitudinal studies are very expensive and hard to conduct. Teachers as Researchers- action research (problem-solving investigation) **More in future lectureWhy research?-to explore-to calibrate measurements (find norms of behavior)-to demonstrate cause/effect-to verify others’ findingsWhy read research?-AUTONOMY AND AUTHORITY in a classroom-Ideas and strategies-Knowledge and
