Schramm 1Kristen SchrammCFB 3333, MWF 11-11:50September 19, 2014Midterm PaperClaim: Chiropractic has long been a practice with many promises that cannot be backed by scientific evidence. All kinds of false claims are made by individuals as well as associations. Although this has been going on since the profession was born, it seems that chiropractic just keeps making more and more of these false claims as time has gone on.Abstract:Since the beginning of modern medicine people have tried to find “safer”, “more natural” ways to take care of themselves, one of these methods is chiropractic. Although chiropractic may help for the occasional back pain, it is not scientifically proven to do much more than just that. Chiropractors have been known to state that all kinds of physical, and mental problems can be fixed by a quick “adjustment”. This of course sounds great to people who want to avoid the trouble of modern medicine. Some chiropractors have even gone so far to refer to themselves as doctors when they do not have the qualifications. Chiropractic can even be dangerous due to their unbacked confidence and lack of medical knowledge. This is a very widespread form of pseudoscience that can be misleading for people who are uninformed.Outline:Intro- Outline main points & draw the reader in.- State the claim, give overview of whole paperBody- Description & Argument- What is the practice/why is it pseudoscience?Body- Mental Effect- Placebo study, How mind can trick self into believing it helpso Being told its helping, very persuasiveo Evidence that is convincing but not scientifically correct.Body- False Claimso Nutritiono “out of place” affect things it really doesn’to Better than modern medicineBody- How can it Harm?Schramm 2o Case studieso Diaphragm paralysis- Physicians reviewsBody- Why do people believe?- Denial of own condition- “Natural”- Lack of prior healthcare experience- TrustBody- How can this be changed?- New legislation about being able to refer to themselves as medical doctors- Education of the people- More research- it is limited partially due to being a touchy issueo Chiropractic unable to claim anything that is not scientifically backed upConclusion- Sum up and restate the outline, state the claim.Sources:Downes, Norma Jean, et al.
