Kristen SchrammAlan HumasonCHEM 311710/29/14SYNT 719-Brominating AlkenesPost-Lab Questions1.a. The melting point for the product of cinnamic acid had a melting point of 198.7 to 202.8 degrees celcius. This melting point most closely matches 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropanoic acid in the –erythro formation with a melting point of 203, so it must be the product. The melting point for the product of trans-stilbene was 251.9 to 254.1 degrees celcius. This most closely resemblesmeso-1,2-dibromo-1,2-diphenylethane with a melting point of 238, so this must be the product.b. Refer to the calculations page.c.2. The percent yield for each was calculated. Cinnamic Acid was 63.7% and trans-stilbene was 114.7%. Refer to calculations3. a. When silver nitrate was added to the products they very quickly produced a white precipitate.b. The precipitate forms due to a substitution reaction taking place with the alkylhalide.
