Kristen Schramm Alan Humason CHEM 3117 10 29 14 SYNT 719 Brominating Alkenes Post Lab Questions 1 a The melting point for the product of cinnamic acid had a melting point of 198 7 to 202 8 degrees celcius This melting point most closely matches 2 3dibromo 3 phenylpropanoic acid in the erythro formation with a melting point of 203 so it must be the product The melting point for the product of trans stilbene was 251 9 to 254 1 degrees celcius This most closely resembles meso 1 2 dibromo 1 2 diphenylethane with a melting point of 238 so this must be the product b Refer to the calculations page c 2 The percent yield for each was calculated Cinnamic Acid was 63 7 and transstilbene was 114 7 Refer to calculations 3 a When silver nitrate was added to the products they very quickly produced a white precipitate b The precipitate forms due to a substitution reaction taking place with the alkyl halide The silver ion binds to the halide cation making the creamy white color 4 Refer to the calculations sheet
