Study Report (25 points)Several weeks this semester, a research study is assigned as part of your readings. The purpose ofassigning these studies is to a) get you more familiar and comfortable reading and translating research studies so you get better at it, and b) to help you see how the topics we cover in class can be examined using research. This semester you need to select 3 of the assigned studies and fill out the following research report about them. Eligible studies are marked with a “+” in the schedule of readings on the syllabus. To complete the report, answer the questions below in bold font the comments that aren’t in boldfont are just some things to help you tackle the question, but you can ignore them if you want.Your answers should be typed and double-spaced. You can answer them on this sheet, or you can cut and paste the questions and answer them on a different sheet if you want. You don’t need to write a novel about the study. Your answer to each question will probably be a few sentences. Furthermore, you should write as plainly and clearly as you can—leave out the fancy punctuationand unnecessarily big words. The point of this assignment is to convince me (Dr. Cohen) that you understand the gist of what you are reading, and can explain it in simple terms to someone else.Your study reports are due at the beginning of class on which the reading assigned reading is going to be discussed. Reports for studies that have already been discussed in class will not be accepted. To increase the odds of you contributing to discussion, you are also required to be in attendance on the day that you submit your study report.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Name: Zach HardmanDate: 11-11-14Study Report Questions1. What is the title of the study you are reporting on and who are the authors? (2pt)Title: “We are the Tea Party!: The Use of Facebook as an Online Political Forum For the Construction and Maintenance of In-Group Identification during the “GOTV” Weekend”Authors: David T. Morin & Mark A. Flynn2. In your own words (nothing fancy), explain why the researchers wanted to conduct this study (5pts). Examine the literature review to answer this question. Questions that might help guide your answer: Why did this study need to be done? What were the researchers hoping to learn, understand better, or demonstrate? What is the justification for doing this research? This study needed to be done because scholars have not examined the political discourse on socialnetworking sites such as Facebook. Few researchers had attempted to understand how political partisans are used in social networking sites to strengthen a party’s identity. As a result, Morin and Flynn decided tofocus their study on the Tea Party, and how they used Facebook to “construct and maintain” an identity during the “Get Out and Vote” weekend. 3. In your own words (nothing too fancy), explain what the researchers expected to find with their study? OR, if there were no predictions, what was the main question they were asking?(3pts)Researchers, Morin and Flynn, asked two main questions in this study – 1) Do individuals who embrace the Tea Party attempt to build a unified social identity when communicating on social networking sites? 2) Do individuals who embrace the Tea Party use polarization strategies during the process of identity formation on SNSs, and if so, what types? 4. In your own words (nothing too fancy), explain what the researchers did to test their predictionsor to answer their research questions (5pts) Examine the procedure or method section to answer this question. Some questions that might help guide your answer: Who participated in the study and how did they find those people? What method did they use (survey, interview, experiment, content analysis etc.)? But don’t simply list a word for the methodology, explain how the researchers did it. In other words, briefly explain what the procedure was for figuring out the answer to their questions. Morin and Flynn’s data was collected from the official senatorial Facebook pages of three Tea PartyCandidates - Christine O’Donnell of Delaware, Sharron Angle of Nevada, and Ken Buck of Colorado. They chose these candidates’ because they were well known and financed in competitive raceof campaigns against Democratic candidates’. The candidates’ official Facebook’s were chosen becausethey updated their status and were more active in the page as apposed to the actual Tea Party Facebook page. 5. In your own words (nothing too fancy), explain the researchers’ main findings (5pts) Examine the result section (you don’t have to understand the numbers) and/or the discussion section to answer this question. Some questions that might help guide your answer: Did they support their predictions, or answer their questions? How did they interpret their results? Overall, give a summary about what can we conclude from this study.Attacking Theme: As stated before the researchers categorized the study into comments in an attacking manner and an encouragement manner. The attacking theme was categorized into attacking the opponent, republicans, Obama, and the media. 6. In your own words (nothing too fancy), explain why this study is significant or important? (5pts)Examine the discussion or relate the findings back to other readings and conversations wer are having in class. Some questions that might help guide your answer: Who participated in the study and how did they find those people? What method did they use (survey, interview, experiment, content analysis etc.)? But don’t simply list a wordfor the methodology, explain how the researchers did it. In other words, briefly explain what the procedure was for figuring out the answer to their
