The purpose of this course is to provide an introductory overview of communication disorders that occur in children and adults as well as to provide an understanding of the professions that specialize in communication disorders.Course Format:This is a designated Next-Gen Course, a University of North Texas initiative to provide a learning and teaching platform for self-directed, student-engaged inquiry consistent with our overarching goal to be student-centered.This course will have a “blended” delivery: it is a mix of face-to-face lectures and discussions; guest speakers; audio-visual presentations; web-based course content delivery; self-managed learning. Course Objectives:At the conclusion of this course, it is anticipated students will be able to demonstrate knowledgein the following:1. Function of the anatomical systems in regards to communication.2. Normal communication and major communication disorders.3. Professional roles and issues in the fields of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.Course Requirements:Required Text:Communication and Communication Disorders, A Clinical Introduction, Fourth Edition, by P. M. Beeson and E. Plante, 2012, Pearson (ISBN 0-205-53209-8).1Nature of Communication Disorders, Fall, 2014Course Grading:Your grade is determined by the total number of points you have earned during the semester divided by the total number of possible points. All exams will be completed in class and online through ExamSoft. You will download the exam before coming to class. In class you will be given a password and take the exam. You will upload your exam and get your results immediately. If you do not have a laptop or ipad to use for the exam, you will take your exam in the testing center.Course grades are based on the cumulative points from:- 1 ExamSoft practice exam – 10 points- Class participation – 40 points- 2 Exams – 55 points each = 110 points- 9 online assessments – 10 points each = 90 points- 6 speakers – 5 points each = 30 points - Case study report – 20 points- Final examination: 100 pointsThe total number of possible points for Introduction to Nature of Communication Disorders is 400.Letter Grade (%) Point ScaleA (>90) 360-400B (80-89) 320-359C (70-79) 280-319D (60-69) 240-279F (<59) 239 or lessExamsoft practice exam: (10 points) We will have a practice exam using Examsoft. This will be completed in class on 9/16. You will need a computer or ipad. Attendance/Participation: (40 points) Students who are actively engaged in the learning process learn and retain more information. Regular attendance in class and active listening/participating in classroom discussion is necessary for optimal learning. It is your responsibility to attend class. This grade will be determined by participation in discussions, attendance checks and participation quizzes.I value your questions, observations, opinions, and insights. This class will be very interactive and your participation is important. Please come to class, listen actively and engage in discussion.Quizzes/Exams: (110 points)Students are expected to take class exams on the date the exam is scheduled The 2 exams willbe multiple-choice. Each exam is worth 55 points. These exams will be completed online in class using ExamSoft. Make-up examinations are at the discretion of the professor.2Nature of Communication Disorders, Fall, 2014Exam #1 55 points – September 30Exam #2 55 points – November 25Online assessments: (90 points)Nine classes will be online rather than meeting face-to-face. You will complete the interactions and an online assessment within the week designated for each online assignment. The assessment will only be available for one week. You will have two opportunities to take the online assessment during the week it is open. If you have difficulty with computer access during the time the assessment is open, email me and I will arrange for you to take it again. You may not make-up the online assessments, unless you have emailed me during the open time. You will complete a speaker comment form for each speaker to earn5 points for your attendance. Please demonstrate respect for the speakers by arriving on time and do not leave during the presentation.Speaker schedule is subject to change. Please check announcements on blackboard for any changes.Topic DateCochlear Implants 9/9Hearing Aids 9/11Ototoxins 9/18Tinnitus 9/23Voice 10/21Fluency 11/4Case study (complete only one): (20 points)Each student will complete ONE case study/interview report. The student will interview a person (or caretaker of a person) who has experienced (or continues to experience) a communication disorder. These are due at three different times (you will only complete one interview) based on the type of communication disorder. The due date for your 1 report is based on your topic Due date based on topic Due dateHearing 10/7Speech Sound Disorder, voice/swallowing, fluency 10/283Nature of Communication Disorders, Fall, 2014Adult language, child language 11/11Final Exam: (100 points)Format of the Final examination – The final examination will assess student’s comprehensive understanding of course material/topics, with emphasis on integration/application of knowledge. Format will be multiple choice and taken online in class using ExamSoft.Grades: Grades will be posted throughout the semester on Blackboard
