Catalog Description: Electromagnetism and modern physics. B. Prerequisites: PHYS 1301. Primarily for majors other than physics andengineering. Credit may not be applied toward a degree for PHYS 1302 andUniversity Physics II, PHYS 1322. Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to learn the principles ofelectromagnetism and modern physics. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:1. comprehend and apply laws such as Gauss’ law, Coulomb’ laws and Kirchoff’s law;2. be able to apply basic physics laws to solve real life problems;3. to develop the processes of logical thinking and reasoning.Other learning outcomes include:1. Students completing this course will be able to convey knowledgeof the basics principles of physics and be able to use theseprinciples to solve elementary problems.2. Students will be able to take a real life problem and use physicalprinciples and basic mathematical tools to describe the problem.3. Student will have the ability to communicate orally and in writing ina clear concise manner the concepts of Physics. Course Content: This course will cover chapters 16-32 which includes the following topical areas:1. Electric Charge, Forces and Fields2. Electric Potential and Potential Energy3. Homework Assignments: Ten homework problems will be assigned at the beginning of each chapterand will be due approximately one week from that date. Due dateextensions will only be allowed with a valid excuse. The lowest homeworkgrade will be dropped.MODIFIED MasteringPhysics (http://www. pearsonmastering .com/) A MODIFIED MasteringPhysics access code will come with the purchaseof a new textbook from the book store, or you can buy an access codewith or without eText from the website above. You can get temporaryaccess to the course for 2 weeks without an access code. Please see theinformation on Blackboard to learn how to register. The course ID for thiscourse is: whitehead49228.NOTE: If you used MasteringPhysics in 1301, this is a DIFFERENTwebsite and requires a different kind of access code. If you have anactive MasteringPhysics account that you used last semester or that youpurchased by mistake, you do NOT have to purchase a new code. You will be upgraded tofull access to the Modified MasteringPhysics by the publisher.B. Exams: There will be three regular exams and a final exam for a total offour exams for the course. The regular exams will be given during the Friday examination period onthe dates shown in the schedule. They will cover 4 or 5 chapters and willconsist of 12 multiple choice problems.The final exam will be comprehensive covering all chapters covered forthe course. The format of the final exam will be similar to that of a regularexam. This exam will be given during the University Departmental examscheduled time.You will need a calculator for the exams. Use of cell phones or otherpersonal electronic devices for calculations will NOT be permitted duringexams.The lowest regular exam grade will be replaced by the final exam grade, ifthe final exam grade is higher. There will be no make-up exams.C. Quizzes: 6 online quizzes will be given throughout the semester. You willbe given at least 3 days to complete each quiz. The lowest quiz grade willbe dropped.D. Concept Questions: Concept questions will be administered duringlecture. Answers for the concept questions will be submitted using apersonal remote system (clicker). Students will discuss these questions inteams of 2-3 students as a method of peer instruction. Each clicker costs$40 plus tax.
