ChinaCurrent LectureThere are global problems- why does the world not take action?UN- designed to be weak, can’t take actions There is no global government Such a thing has never been tried, or even suggested. This won’t happen but an exception could be the UNstates do have organizations that span state boundaries we call these IGOs- Intergovernmental Organizations These are agreements that states talk about and agree to that govern interactions between the sovereign states IGO’s can be formal or informal Informal- not really negotiated, but just the way that things have behaved in the past comes to be seen as just the way things are Formal- negotiated between states, usually with a treaty that results from the negotiation agreement can produce:1. a set of rules2. a formal IGO- these are the organizations that make the news all of this is global governance purpose is to further cooperation between states These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
