DID is not the same as schizophrenia Current Lecture-MAO-Inhibitor AbuseoCan be naturally occurring in certain plantsoIncrease in brain levels of norepi, dopamine, serotonin oReported to produce hallucinationsoCan produce physical dependence as demonstrated by a withdrawal syndrome, which may be severe especially if MAO-I discontinued abruptly or too quicklyoAbuse of MAO-I is not as significant as BZs-SSRI abuseoOccasionally abused in teenage rave scene oUse of fluoxetine & sertraline amongst people taking E in clubs-SSRIs taken w/ or before E prolong high from 2-4 hr and make is easier to come down w/o hangoveroMDMA largely metabolized by cytochrome P450-Inhibited by SSRIs-Enhance and prolong effects of MDMA by decreasing rate of metabolismoIn one case, 4 80 mg Prozac pills & 2 cans of beer on empty stomach produced increasedenergy, talkativeness, mood elevation and slight jitters, but she reported it was unlike speed b/c she felt so numb and calmo2nd case, person took 80-140mg (4-7 pills) a day but later increased this to handful-He experiences amphetamine like effect & later needed Valium to sedate him at nightoLives of both patients became dominate3d by taking the drug, each requiring hospital admission, but neither experienced withdrawal on discontinuation-Psychosis oSymptom of mental illness, not a specific mental disorder in which sufferer experiences things and believes them to be real when they are notoOrganic psychosis, formerly known as organic brain syndrome -Secondary to a disturbance in brain structure or function & caused by head injury, alcoholism or other kinds of organic disease-Schizophrenia oChronic, severe & disabling brain disorder than has affects about 1% of the American population oSchizo's may hear voices other people do not -May believe other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them oMay or may not make sense when they talk-May sit for hours w/o moving or talking -May seem perfectly fine until they talk about what they are really thinking -Public perception of schizophrenia oHollywood has considerable negative impact on public understanding of mental disorders especially schizophrenia oPortrayals of schizo are generally inaccurate and completely ignore modern scienceoMost popular misconception is same as multiple personality disorder-Multiple personality disorder does not equal schizophrenia oPopularized by Hollywood, multiple personality disorder is now classified as DIDoOnly 200 cases of true DID have been recorded in medical
