SOC 0438 1st EditionExam # 2 Study GuideStudy Guide for Sociology of the Family Exam 2The second exam will take place on Monday 11/10.After speaking to the TA I was informed that It will be mainly focused on divorce (its effects on children, etc.) and on same sex marriages. The chapters that are mainly referenced are 17, 18, 20, 23, and 25. Unlike the first exam there will be direct references to the online lecture slides and the TA encourages the memorization of them.Chapter 17: The impact of divorce on children’s behavior.Summary: this article questions whether behavioral problems in children thathail from divorced families exist because of the divorce or if it is some other factor that causes both the divorce and the behavioral problems. Rather thancomparing the behavior of children with divorced parents to that of children whose parents have remained married this study compares the behavior of the same children before and after the divorce. The results off the study showed that divorce did not have any significant impact on children’s behavior (the parents rarely noticed much change in their child’s behavior). The author proposes that it was actually the qualities of a ”bad” marriage or “bad” parenting that led to behavioral problems and in most cases eventual divorce.Chapter 18: How do they do that; estimating the proportion of marriages thatend in divorce. This short article discusses the many different ways that are used to estimate the percentage of marriages that end in divorce and points out the many issues that can arise from them and cause the data to be inaccurate. Chapter 20: From outlaws to in-laws: Gay and lesbian couples in contemporary society You can find a summary and discussion of this article on this Prezi presentation.https://prezi.com/dukprgx-rfgy/from-outlaws-to-in-laws-gay-and-lesbian-couples-in-contempo/Chapter 23: beyond family structure: Family studies help to reframe debates about what’s good for children. This chapter discusses family structure, family demographic, family values, and children’s wellbeing. The family process: there are 5 kind of risk or protective factors that affect children’s development.1. The level of adaptation of each family member, his or her self-perception and indicators of mental health and psychological distress2. The quality of both mother-child and father-child relationships 3. The quality of the relationship between parents including communication styles, conflict revolution, problem solving styles, and emotion regulation.4. The patterns of both couple and parent-child relationships transmitted across generations, from grandparents to parents to children5. The balance between life stressors and social support outside the immediate family.Chapter 25: diverging development: the not so invisible hand of social class in the United States. In this article the author discusses how Social class establishes a set of life chances and opportunities that affects an individual's future. You can find more about the article in this Prezi presentation
