Teaching Community Report English 90 – Spring 2005 Teaching Community Focus • Course Outcomes Focus: A) Read actively, in order to comprehend and summarize pre-college readings* B.) Read critically, in order to analyze, evaluate and synthesize pre-college readings. Students will also explain how the social-cultural-historical context of both the reader and the text influence their meaning-making process • How well do students read, summarize and respond? • We read Reading for Understanding as the basis of our discussions and lesson plans Teaching Community Participants • 13 instructors taught 17 sections of English 90 in the spring of 2005. Of these four instructors participated (30%) in the teaching community, three full-time and one part-time instructor, which represented five sections (29%) Teaching Community Sessions ( Staff Development Component of TC) • Journals reflecting on practice/progress in moving from trying a new approach or strategy to developing, and eventually embedding that innovation in your class. • Literature Read Links Minutes/agendas Lesson plans/activities Student Feedback • Relate to TC Focus/Learning Outcomes (I failed to have participants poll students) Faculty Feedback/Reflection on Experience in TC • Survey of Satisfaction with Teaching Community Experience• Final Reflection based on journal entries throughout semester. Focus on scholarship of teaching: what was learned as a result of teaching community experience and how it influenced professional
