Dual Credit Policies Whitharral High School Precalculus TEXTBOOK: Precalculus with Limits, Larson, Hostetler, Edwards, 2nd edition. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Attend class and be aware of announcements made in class. 2. Work homework problems early enough to seek help if needed. 3. Work extra problems as required to understand each topic. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of t his course and receiving a passing grade, the student will have mastered at least 70% of the course objectives. The course objectives provide that the student will be able to: 1. Factoring and application of factoring in rational expressions. 2. Reduce, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify rational expressions. 3. Reduce, add, subtract, multiply, and divide exponential and radical expressions. 4. Use a graphing utility to graph linear and quadratic functions, find solutions, and maximum and minimums. 5. Find solutions of quadratic equations through a variety of methods including: factoring, quadratic equation, graphing, matrices, and completing the square. 6. Identify and apply inverse functions. 7. Find real zeros of polynomial functions of higher orders making use of polynomial division and synthetic division. 8. Understand complex numbers, conjugates and other properties of imaginary numbers. 9. Graph rational functions including asymptotes. 10. Graph conic sections including translations and completing the square to find a standard form equation. 11. Understand angles and coterminal angles, trigonometric functions and cofunctions. Graph the six trig functions and translations and mutations of the functions. 12. Verify Trigonometric Identities and solve trigonometric equations. 13. Memorize and apply the sum and difference, multiple-angle, and product-to-sum formulas. Apply law of sines, and law of cosines when needed.SPECIFIC GRADING POLICIES 1. The semester grade will be determined in the same manner as all Whitharral High School classes. Each six weeks grade will count 2/7 and the semester exam will count 1/7. 2. The semester exam will be a comprehensive exam and no exemptions will be allowed. 3. Each six weeks grade is determined 70% on homework/quiz grades and 30% on exam grades. 4. Short quizzes will be given periodically to determine areas of concern and understanding. OTHER RANDOM COMMENTS: The successful acquisition of mathematical knowledge requires not only attentiveness in class, but a great deal of practice outside of class. Just as a good athlete must continue to work out to maintain physical stamina, a student must apply time and energy in academic areas. There must exist a respect and working relationship between the students and the teacher. I expect a great deal from my students, but I offer a great deal also. I will be prepared for class and will grade assignments and return them in a timely fashion. I am very open to questions and do not mind re-explaining or trying to explain in a different way. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY: South Plains College and Whitharral High School strive to accommodate the individual needs of all students in order to enhance their opportunities for success in the context of a comprehensive community college setting.
