cleansingWater- Rituals are done to appeal and to serve God (s) / deities / other sacred powers.- Some rituals are performed by the individual or by groups of worshipers.- Service - the performance of a ritual.- Many religions have rituals that are intended to purify the body.- Water is used to cleanse oneself of sins.- Cleansing provides a form of rebirth, restoringpurity and renewal.- Shinto - there is no concept of sin. There is ritual impurity that can bring about famine, drought or war. (Cleansing of one's mind...) Before people enter a Shinto shrine they splash water on their hands and face and rinse their mouth to purify themselves in order to approach the kami (spirits). - Cleansing of water (plentiful in nature)- Shinto - one can bath in the ocean (source of life) - A believer will stand beneath a waterfall and let the force of the water hit the shoulders and carry impurities and tensions away. Waterfall itself is kami. Shinto cleansing- Hindus consider the water of the Ganges to be sacred, every year many hindus purify their bodies by bathing and immersing themselves in the river (holy city of Banares, India)- Pilgrims to Benares - purify bathes in Ganges River while facing the rising sun.cleansingGanges RiverBaptismcleansing- Christianity - to participate in Jesus' sacrifices, people could repent their sins, be baptized, and be reborn to a new life in Christ.- Baptism - A Christian sacrament by which God cleanses all sin and makes one a sharer in the divinelife, and a member of Christ's body, the Church. - Noah and the Flood - Civilization was not pure, acting incorrectly, God flooded the area to cleanse the land. - Ceremony of Baptism = marks the entrance of a person into Christianity. Water is placed on the head of a new born infant or an elder person.- The movie will consist of someone washing his / her face. The camera will be positioned underneath a glass sink or bowl of some kind. The camera will not move, there will be no editing involved - the only editing will be the slowing down of the footage. It will be one long continuous take. - There will be dirt washed off of a face and dissipating into the clean fresh water. The clean water, over time, will become clouded with the "sins" or dirt being removed from the person's skin / face. - The person washing their face will be taking deep breathes as their head is out of the water. Almost as if theperson is terrified of letting go of what they know so well. Lowering their face they will exhale the restraints and constrictions they feel (emotionally) as they release and remove their "sins." - The drops that fall from their face will represent tears although they will be water from the bowl. - The glass bowl - represents how we are able to look the same (physically) before and after this process, but whatis important is that it is beyond what we see on the surface, and be able to look into our soul, which matters. We must be able to see within ourselves to ponder over our bad deeds and become wise to the changes we must make - in order to change how our eye misrepresent what we see in our reflection. Imagescleansingcleansing ImagesBest Place to Show the Piece:- Similar to Bill Viola's Presentations....a very slow motion image projected or played on a screen.- Image needs to be slow to emphasize the process of cleanliness that occurs not only externally but also internally. __________________________________________________Expected Audience:- Anyone that walks by- Those who are religious or spiritual or know the meaning behind a cleansing will be able to take more away from the images than just what is on the screen.-
