Communications I PT508 & PT 510 Syllabus Fall 2010 Instructor: Dr. David H. Jussely I. TEXTS AND MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED A. The following books: Chapell, Brian. Christ-Centered Preaching Davis, Ralph. The Word Became Fresh Olyott, Stuart. Ministering Like the Master Olyott, Stuart. Preaching Pure and Simple Gordon, David. Why Johnny Can’t Preach Various articles distributed in class Commentaries, Commentaries, Commentaries B. DVD’s on which to record your sermons in the Lab. II. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE A. Prerequisites A student must have completed the course “Introduction to Preaching.” The Class (PT508) and the Lab (PT510) are designed to complement each other. Lab will be used primarily for student sermons and evaluations. The course will be graded on participation in both the class and the lab. Grades will not necessarily be the same. Only on extremely rare (almost impossible) circumstances will permission be granted for a student to take the class without the Lab. B. Approach 1. Theory: We will study homiletical and communication theory by means of lectures and reading assignments. 2. Models: By reading/listening to sermons, we will see how others have applied the theory. 3. Practice: By preparing and delivering sermons, you will learn by doing.III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. ATTENDANCE AT ALL CLASS AND LAB SESSIONS 1. Consistent and punctual attendance is expected at both the Class and the Lab sessions. Unexcused absences will be penalized. If any student has more than 4 unexcused absences, he will fail the course. 2. Chapel attendance on Tuesdays are highly recommend for this course. Listening to sermons is God’s way of instructing us. 3. All request for absences to be excused must be submitted in writing and approved by me. ([email protected]) 4. Scheduling conflicts. If you have a scheduling conflict with some other course (required course only) which meets at the same time as this class, and which you absolutely cannot take at some other time, or during some other semester, you may be given permission to attend the two courses on alternating days of the week (provided that the other professor involved is willing to make the same concession). If the conflict affects the afternoon Lab sessions, you may be given permission to miss one hour of the Lab session in order to attend the other class. B. READING SERMONS AND ESSAYS ON HOMILETICS In addition to the required reading material, you may be assigned supplemental readings of sermons and essays on homiletical issues. C. SERMON EVALUATION FORMS From time to time you may evaluate your classmate’s sermons. However, it is better for you to listen and pay attention during the sermon than distract others by your evaluation process. D. SERMON PREPARATION AND PREACHING 1. You will preach three or four times in the preaching lab. a. The first sermon will be delivered next week, and must be in my possession by Monday, September 6. b. The other two/three sermons are to be on texts taken from assigned Old Testament narratives, prophetic materials, or wisdom literature.c. Sermons (except the first one) will be limited to 25 minutes (excluding the reading of the text).A time of evaluation will follow. 2. A full manuscript of each sermon you preach is to be handed to me on the day BEFORE you preach. If you miss this deadline, SEVEN points will be deducted from your score. You will read and list at least 10 commentaries on each passage of Scripture that you preach. 3. Videotaping: You are responsible for providing your own DVD to record your Lab sermons. E. A FINAL EXAM WILL NOT BE GIVEN IF CLASS ATTENDANCE IS EXCEPTIONAL. THERE WILL BE A TEST GIVEN LATE-TERM. F. Quizzes on the contents of certain books may be given. G. ASSIGNMENTS: IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS THAT MAY SAVE YOUR SANITY! 1. The Class and the Lab constitute FOUR (4) credit hours. That means the assignments, which are many, are not excessive. 2. Please TYPE all assignments. 3. Put your NAME on all assignments and evaluations – PLEASE!! GRADING For Class 25% Class Attendance 25% Quizzes and Book Reports 50% Exams For Lab 20% Evangelistic Sermon 10% Attendance 35% OT Narrative 35% OT Wisdom Or 10% Lab attendance 10% Evangelistic Sermon 40% OT Narrative Sermon 40% OT Wisdom (Psalm)
