Descriptive Information A. Course number and title: EDCS 729 – Organizational Change and the Curriculum B. Catalogue description: Investigation of the process of diffusion and adoption of innovations and change, emphasizing factors inhibiting or facilitating change in education. C. Course credit: Three graduate hours D. Prerequisite: Admission to Graduate School E. Statement of Course Goals and Objectives A. Goal: This course is designed to assist the professional educator explore the knowledge and skills essential to understanding organizational change within the P-12 and higher education communities and the impact of change forces within related organizations on educational environments. B. Objectives: The professional educator exploring organizational change will: 1. explore organizational change in educational environments, 2. explore organizational change in business, religious and government environments, 3. investigate examples of organizational change and interaction among related agencies, 4. analyze role of mission statements, strategic plans, etc in reaching organizational goals. III. Required Text: 1. Evans, R. (1996). The human side of school change. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass. Recommended Texts: 1. Briskin, A. (1996). The stirring of soul in the workplace. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass. 2. Senge, P. (1994). The fifth discipline. New York: Currency/Doubleday. 3. Stone, B. (2003). Confessions of a civil servant. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield. 4. Donahue, J (Ed.). (1999). Making Washington work. Washington, DC: Brookings Institution. 5. McIntosh, G. (1995). Three generations. Grand Rapids, MI: Fleming Revell. 6. Strommen, M. (1997). The innovative church.. Minneapolis, MN: Augsburg Fortress. 7. Or other appropriate text with instructor approvalIV. Course Requirements 1. Class Participation: Prompt responses to emails and other electronic communication events is expected. Students are expected to complete assigned readings and other class activities including meeting in any virtual class sessions and other class assignments as required. Due every meeting 2. PowerPoint Summary: The PowerPoint summary will require students to demonstrate knowledge of key concepts and theories presented and discussed during the course regarding the required text, The Human Side of School Change, by Evans. The content should also entail your reaction with relevant examples that compare and contrast to the text in addition to the summation and include a minimum of 10 slides. PowerPoint Due 6/18. 3. Research Paper: The final paper will require students to compare and contrast key elements of organizational change in educational/academic environments to those of the organization of their chosen research topic. This paper should consist of the following sections: 1) introduction; 2) review of related literature including two books read for class in addition to 5 additional sources; 3) comparison of organizations highlighting similarities and differences among mission statements, strategic plans, outcomes, etc.; 4) conclusion summarizing existing relationships among educational and related organizations and recommendations for future collaborations among organizations in their change efforts. Paper should be approximately 5-7 pages. Paper Due by 7/3. V. Administrative Course Requirements 1. Written assignment should be typed, double-spaced, and free of spelling and grammatical errors, completed within the suggested page length and submitted by the due date. 2. Assignments including ideas and information from other sources should include proper documentation using APA style or other appropriate referencing format. 3. Students are expected to adhere to the University’s attendance requirements. VI. Evaluation and Grading Each component of the course will be weighted as follows: 1. Class Participation 20% 2. PowerPoint Summary 40% 3. Research Paper 40% Letter Grade A = 100-93 B+ = 92-89 B = 88-86 C+ = 85-82 C = 81-78 D+ = 77-74 D = 73-70 F = 69-0VII. Weekly Activities: Virtual class meeting. Read text(s) and draft PowerPoint. Email exchange with professor; etc. 1. Review syllabus and come to virtual lecture hall prepared to ask questions, receive clarifications, additional instructions, etc. 2. To access lecture hall select: Communication, Collaboration, Join Lecture Hall (If you arrive later in the session, please read all prior dialogue to see if your questions have been addressed; then join the conversation).
