HIST 106 1nd Edition Lecture 16 Outline of Last Lecture I WWII Outline of Current Lecture I Holocaust Survivor Speech Current Lecture Mr Al Marks Holocaust survivor Concentration camps he survived o Auschwitz o Mauthausen o Melk o Ebensee Came back when he was 19 and was drafted by the US Army for Korean War The concentrations camps were not only for people of Jewish faith o of the 16 000 in concentration camps 8 000 were Christians The concentration camps were designed to keep people while they work and execute them when it s over Hungary was the last to be occupied by the Nazi s 1944 Hitler marched into Hungary and took the undesirable and put them on freight trains to Auschwitz Dr Mangoly a medical doctor sent him away from his parents without a chance to say goodbye His parents were gassed and passed away July 8th 1944 US air force bombed Melk by mistake o Lost 600 people o Marks has a piece of bomb in his lungs found out b c of an x ray Marks was liberated at Ebensee along with 16 000 others in July 1945 The average day in the camp o Digging tunnels where the rockets from US air force were supposed to be hidden o Food was just enough to have strength to work o Just trying to stay alive and work o He was friends with people who spoke the same language These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute One day before liberation o SS wanted to send prisoners into the tunnel but they refused b c they knew they would all die in the tunnel o The next day Bob Persinger drove into the camp with his Jeep and saved Marks and others Occasionally the guards were helpful SS Guards were the bad guys SS Commandant of Melk Julius Ludolf was tried and sentenced to death Did you lose your Jewish Faith o Lost part of it he sometimes questioned why did this happen to him Weighed about 90 pounds when liberated Anybody who tried to escape they were captured and executed Women were in separate camps What gave you hope throughout the whole experience o The statement where there is life there is hope For 20 years he did not talk about what happened He was 13 when taken to the camp and was liberated a year later Did you go back to the camps o Ebensee is now a cemetery o Melk would not let him in b c it is owned by military The executions were the worst thing he had to witness Were children always taken away from parents o All children were separated except for identical twins o The twins were treated like angels b c Dr Mangoly was performing experiments on them when the experiment was over they were executed Lesson you need good friends in your life 9000 concentration camps during WWII Marks chose to come to the US b c coming to America is desired in by many in Europe
