The course will begin on January 19th and end on May 8thth; therefore, it cannot be dropped completely for 100% refund. Course Competencies - The student will be able to perform on a "novice" to "intermediate" level, as defined by ACTFL (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language) Guidelines and SCANS (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills), which are available upon request. Assignments - Assignments are to be prepared before class. Each assignment will be due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. Assignments will include readings and textbook exercises (oral and written), “My Spanish Lab” (www.myspanishlab.com), which requires internet access*, and/or other activities designed to stimulate and reinforce foreign language acquisition. Please prepare your assignments carefully and expect to participate in class. On average you should study an amount of time equal to that spent in class. In this class you will learn a skill. As in acquiring any skill, you must practice, practice, practice!! This is similar to other skills, such as swimming, running, tennis, football or piano. You are expected to be on time and to remain the entire class period. If you leave prior to the dismissal of class, you will be counted absent. Three tardies will constitute an absence (this means there are two “free” tardies). Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period. Attendance grades will be recorded as follows. Absences Grade 0 100 1 90 2 80 3 70 4 60 5 0 If you miss class for any reason you are considered absent. There will be no make up work. If you will be absent, contact me prior to the scheduled class, as homework that is due may be turned in early. It will not be accepted otherwise! Each student must take the oral final exam. Perfect attendance will be rewarded! Each student with perfect attendance and a "B" or better, may exercise the option to take the comprehensive written final exam. This may not be a realistic expectation for all students - it will be the individual's choice. (See SPC General College Catalog and the SPC "Student Guide"). Class Conduct - It is my belief that learning best occurs in a supportive and respectful atmosphere. It is expected that you will conduct yourself in a responsible manner. Rudeness and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Tardiness, sleeping and visiting with classmates will not be permitted since such activities inhibit the learning atmosphere. Pagers and cell phones are not appropriate in class. Should you carry one of these items, please turn it off upon entering the classroom. If infractions occur, I will visit with you at that time. If the problem persists, you will be withdrawn from the class at my request and receive a grade of "withdrawn failing." Special Notice - If at any time you decide to drop the course, it is your responsibility to do so. Please follow the appropriate procedures. If you are absent four times and have not initiated the "drop", you will be dropped by the instructor and expect to receive a grade of "withdrawn failing." The last day to drop the course is April 24th. Academic Integrity - Cheating and plagiarism constitute serious offenses and will not be tolerated. (See the SPC General College Catalog and the SPC "Student Guide"). In this class, please be aware that utilization of online translation websites constitutes cheating. Diversity Statement - In this class, the teacher will establish and support an environment that values and nurtures individual and group differences, and encourages engagement and interaction. Understanding and respecting multiple experiences and perspectives will serve to challenge and stimulate all of us to learn about others, about the larger world and about ourselves.
