This course will not satisfy graduation requirements. This course is required if testing indicates a need. Course Objectives: Successful completion of this course should reflect mastery of the following objectives. Chapter and section numbers are indicated in parentheses. 1. Add, subtract, multiply and divide real numbers. (1.4) 2. Use the order of operations to simplify an expression. (1.6) 3. Simplify algebraic expressions. (1.7) 4. Solve linear equations. (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) 5. Translate and solve word problems. (2.5, 2.6, 2.7) 6. Solve linear inequalities. (2.8) 7. Graph equations in two variables by the intercept method and the slope intercept method. (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4) 8. Evaluate expressions using exponent rules. (5.2, 5.4) 9. Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. (5.1, 5.3, 5.5) 10. Factor polynomials, (6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5) 11. Solve quadratic equations by factoring. (6.6) Textbook: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, Sullivan/Struve/Mazzarella,ed. 2 Supplies: You will be allowed to use a scientific calculator. Graphing calculators and calculators on cell phones or other electronic devices will not be allowed. Attendance: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. Record of your attendance will be maintained throughout the semester. You may be dropped from this course with a grade of X or F if you are absent four consecutive classes or if you exceed five absences throughout the semester. NOTE: If you are enrolled in this course to satisfy TSI regulations, the college may withdraw you from all of your courses if you withdraw from or are dropped from this course. Grading: The grade will be determined by averaging the 4 major exams, comprehensive final, and daily grade. The daily grade will be half labs and half homework. Grading Scale: A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 59 or below A grade of C or better is required in order to advance to the next course. Although your grade in this course will not be used in calculating your GPA, your grade in this course is used to determine academic status for financial aid. This course and its grade will be recorded on your official transcript. If you plan to transfer to another college or university, be advised that the grade you make in this course may reflect on your ability to transfer. Homework: • Homework assignments will be made from the textbook. You are responsible for keeping up-to-date and prepared. All work must be shown on homework or no credit will be given. • Homework problems should be worked early enough to seek help if needed. Work extra problems, as required, to understand each topic. • Written homework will be collected each day. • Writing on both sides of the paper is permitted.∙ No late homework will be accepted. If you miss a class period, the homework due that day will be a zero, unless you turn the homework into my office before the day is over. If you miss a day, you are responsible for turning in the new assignment on the next class period. Labs Lab time is not an option. Lab assignments may NOT be made-up. Exams: There will be 4 unit exams and a comprehensive final exam. Dates for the exams are given on the calendar and assignment sheet. There will be no makeups for unit exams. If you miss a test, your final will count twice to make up for the missed exam. Expectations: • READ THE SYLLABUS • Attend class, arrive on time, and be prepared to participate. • Keep all cell phones and pagers turned off and put away for the duration of the class. • Maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
