EXAM 1 - PSYCHOLOGY 612 - SPRING 2006The following questions pertain to the material we covered in class to date. I arranged thequestions in ascending order of difficulty (i.e., first is least difficult and last is most difficult). Please read all questions before beginning to either formulate your answer or write downany responses. Also, each question below references the reading I posted on the website. If you did not read the paper or failed to even see that there was a paper required forthe exam, please raise your hand right now. Finally, please be thorough in your responsesto convince me that you understand the material. Errors of omission are far worse thanerrors of commission. Be aware that while errors of omission might be worse than errors ofcommission, I value concision and brevity as well. Please limit your responses to no morethan 200 words. When grading your response, I will limit my reading to only 200 words. Beforewarned. (Note, this paragraph has 151 words). All questions are tied to the article. Be sure you read the article so you can clearly identifya reasonable response from a poor response. B ear in mind that we have some structure belowfor our scoring to ensure that we agree more than we disagree. All questions will be scoredby at least two graders. Any differences must be reviewed and resolved prior to assigning afinal grade. In terms of the scoring routines outlined below, each item is scored according to bothdeclarative (D) and procedural (P) knowledge. As questions get more difficult, I weigh theprocedural knowledge more than the declarative.11 Who is the audience for e ach service?SCORING• (D) .1 (total of .4) for correctly identifying each of the following audience members:– users– reviewers– scientists– developers• (D − > P) .35 for explaining why they are relevant audience members• (P) .25 for contrasting how they might be different in terms of inquiry22 What evidence might be persuasive to that audi-ence?SCORINGThe following item is not locally independent from the previous item. In order to avoid thisproblem, we do not penalize for omissions from the above. Instead use the following scoringlogic:• (D) .5 for correctly identifying a form of evidence for each audience listed above• (P) .5 for explaining why that evidence might be more persuasive than other sources33 What is the nature of the evidence obtained by eachservice?SCORING• (D) .1 (total of .3) for correctly identifying each service• (D) .1 (total of .3) for correctly describing the evidence obtained by each service• (P) .1 (total of .3) for correctly describing the evidentiary standing of the evidence• (P) .1 total for synthesizing the points above into a single coherent answer44 In terms of scientific inquiry, under what contextdoes each service currently operate?SCORING• (D) .1 for correctly identifying context of discovery or context of justification• (D) .1 for correctly pairing each context with each service• (P) .5 for explaining how each service operates under the context of discovery• (P) .3 for explaining how each service operates under the context of justification55 Write out an explicit general linear model that showshow each service predicts matches. Be sure to labeleach model according to the service and highlighthow they are different.SCORING• (D) .1 for writing out a model for each regardless of its veracity• (D) .3 for writing out a model that makes sense in terms of the GLM where appropriate• (D) .2 for writing out a complete model that includes the basic formula:Ymatch= b1X1+ b2X2+ bX1∗X2+ b0• (P) .4 for explaining how the model reflects the explained theory.66 Which sums of squares might be best suited for test-ing each model’s specific effects?SCORING• (D) .1 for correctly identifying Type I for any model• (D) .3 for explaining that Type I is best because of multicollinearity• (P) .6 for explaining why multicollinearity exists in the data and how Type I mightaddress this
