INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATION OFFICE: C-201 OFFICE HOURS: by appointment TELEPHONE: (972) 860-7108 or 1046 EMAIL ADDRESS: [email protected] CATALOG: Prerequisite: Two years of high school algebra and an appropriate assessment score or Developmental Mathematics 0099 or Development Mathematics 0093. This course is a study of relations and functions including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and special functions. Other topics include complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, theory of equations, progressions, the binomial theorem, proofs, and applications. TEXTBOOK: College Algebra, Blitzer, Pearson (5th Edition), 2010 ISBN: 032-1-666-100, using www.MyMathLab.com Course ID: elam88421 .2 CALCULATOR: As of Spring 2010, a graphing calculator is required for all College Algebra Courses. You may choose your own graphing calculator model; however, TI-83 or TI-84 version is preferred. Graphing Calculators may not be allowed during some examinations. GRADING POLICY: Student must complete course assignments using www.MyMathLab.com via the Internet which will count for 25% of final course grade and make satisfactory progress on the scheduled chapter assessments (tests) that will represent 50% of final course grade along with end of course (departmental final) exam that will account for 25% of final course grade respectively. Also this current semester; if student’s course participation has been productive and non-disruptive, and all assignments are completed; then lowest chapter test grade will be dropped and the remaining test grades will be averaged. GRADING RATIONALE: 90—100 A 80—89 B 70—79 C 60—69 D BELOW 60 F FINAL EXAMINATION: A comprehensive, departmental final examination, which will represent at least 25% of the class grade, will be administered in all College Algebra classes. POLICY ON MISSED TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS: If student misses a scheduled test, then the Final Exam grade will be substituted; but only one missed test is allowed. Late assignments may be docked 20% for each class it is late. GRADE REPORT: Grade reports are no longer mailed. Convenient access is available online. Just use your student identification number when you log onto e-Connect at http://econnect.dcccd.edu/ . DROP DATE: Last date to drop with a grade of ―W‖ is 11-17-2011, Thursday.3 ATTENDANCE POLICY: You are expected to regularly attend all classes in which you are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. Class attendance will be recorded and reported as required. It is very important that punctual, regular attendance is maintained so student may be successful. If a student is unable to complete a course (or courses) in which he/she is registered, it is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the course by the appropriate date. (The date is published in the academic calendar each year and in each semester’s class schedule). If a student does not withdraw, he/she will receive a performance grade, usually a grade of ―F‖. Students who are absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday may take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence if, not later than the 15th day of the semester, the student notified the instructor(s) that the student would be absent for a religious holiday. Sec. 51.911 TX Educ. Code. DROP POLICY: To drop a class or withdraw from the college, students must follow the prescribed procedure. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw. Failure to do so will result in receiving a performance grade, usually grade of ―F‖. No drop or withdrawal requests are accepted by telephone. Students who drop a class or withdraw from the College before the semester deadline receive a ―W‖ (Withdraw) in each class dropped. The deadline for receiving a ―W‖ is indicated on the academic calendar and the current class schedule. If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by 11-17-2011, Thursday. STOP BEFORE YOU DROP SIX DROP RULE: For students who enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007, Texas Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses a student may drop. You may drop no more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career, unless the drop qualifies as an exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops you cannot drop any other courses with a ―W‖. Therefore, please exercise caution when dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of the Dallas County Community Colleges. For more information on the 6 drop rule, you may access: https://www1.dcccd.edu/6drop .4 INCOMPLETES: An incomplete grade of ―I‖ may be given when an unforeseen emergency prevents you from completing the work in a course. The ―I‖ must be converted to a performance grade (A-F) within 90 days after the first day of classes in the subsequent regular semester. If the work is not completed after 90 days, the ―I‖ is converted to a performance grade, usually an ―F‖. An Incomplete Contract is used to assign an incomplete grade and states the requirements for the satisfactory completion of the course. The Incomplete Contract must be agreed upon and signed by the Instructor, the student, and the division dean and submitted with the final grade report. When an Incomplete Contract must be submitted without your signature, the instructor must include a statement indicating that you are aware of and agree with
