Through persuasive writing, the author uses as much language that would convey his/her feelings and beliefs to the audience. Explain that prewriting is an idea gathering process that helps the writer organize thoughts before writing them on paper. Prewriting is not in complete sentences or complete thoughts. It allows the writer to jot down ideas that will serve as a reminder during the drafting portion of the writing process.Explanation of resources and students' specific writing assignmentDiscuss with the students that they will be persuading someone to make a decision about voting for someone for class president. The students will have the choice to write persuasively about the boy or girl who is running for class president. In their prewriting, the students should list who they are writing about, why this person would be a good president, what things they would add to the school, how they would serve in the office of president, where they would focus their attention, and when would things change. The students will list these ideas on the provided graphic organizer.Use my written model as a model during instructionShow my completed graphic organizer to the students so they know the form it will be in. Explain that on my organizer, I have only listed positive things about the person, so I can persuade my audience. Practice ActivityThe class will complete a graphic organizer on the overhead, trying to persuade the school to begin a class newspaper. They will address all of the elements in the graphicorganizer and the students will generate ideas about the subject.Assessment ActivityStudents will be required to complete a graphic organizer focusing on one of the 2candidates for class presidency.Heidi Nix-Read 7140Persuasive PublishingMy written model of publishing for prewritingExplanation of genreExplain to students that persuasive writing is used to persuade an audience to change an opinion or feeling. The students will vote before the persuasive writing begins, and after the debate, they will vote again. This way, the students will be able to see if any of the persuasions worked.Use my written model as a model during instructionI will show the students my final copy of my persuasive paper, and demonstrate how I transferred the information to note cards. I will then proceed to persuade the students on the topic of my paper.Practice ActivityThe students and I will type the final copy of the class’ persuasive paper, and then each student will be in charge of making a note card from something in the paper. As a fact, or persuasive idea is listed on a note card, the student will highlight it, so no two ideas will be repeated. The student that has written the note card will present the idea to the class, and possibly to another class in order to help to persuade the school to have a newspaper.Assessment ActivityStudents will be assessed on their completion of their persuasive paper, and on their participation of the speaking component of this
