What am I trying to accomplish in the Discussion & Analysis section?First and foremost: you want to have a conversational yet scholarly tone of voice.Your goal? To dissect, discuss and analyze, compare and contrast the Literature ReviewDon’t repeat everything from the Lit Review. Instead you want to:Discuss which articles are the studies (hard core science)Discuss which articles are the articles only (mostly opinion)Discuss the goals that were similar . Point out the ones with different types of goals.Discuss which studies are the same based on methodology. Also discuss which studies were different and how they differed (based on methodology.)Discuss and ANALYZE THE RESULTS. Which results are similar and support each other? Which results sort of stand alone? Which results support your hypothesis? Which ones do not support your hypothesis? Do you feel you made a good hypothesis based on the results? Was there a gap in the research? Did you find the kind of studies you were looking for? Does more research need to be done in this area of your hypothesis?********Discuss the “articles” you noted in your Lit Review. (These are not the studies; they did not do a study.)Do you agree with the major points of the article? Why? What did you not agree with? Why not?Did the author support his/her opinion with mention of other authors’ research orstudies? Refer to the Lit Review articles by using the author’s last name or article name.Decide the categories for analysis: turn categories into topic sentences. For example:1) Inventory paragraph: tell how many studies; how many articles2) Purpose paragraph: discuss the purposes of each study noting the similarities and differences3) Methodology paragraph: discuss the various methodologies and how they are similar and different4) Results paragraph: discuss the various results for each study. Why were some different? How different are some of them? 5) Hypothesis paragraph: name the studies which supported your hypothesis6) What were the main arguments of the articles you discussed in LR?7) Did each author do a fair amount of secondary research? Did some of them mention the same authors/studies?8) Do I agree with the arguments? What do I know that’s different from these people’s ideas?According to Jones et al., the purpose of studying binge drinking in students blah blah blah….In “Transfer Shock” the purpose of the study was to determine…..In Johnson’s “Transfer Shock,” he lists various purposes of his research. In Johnson’s “The Elite Community College, he notes that blah blah blahCategories for studiesJones study Smith study Patel studyStudy goals Wanted to find out blah Wanted to find out blah Wanted to find out blahMethodology of studiesGathered 50 studentsQuestionnaireGathered 20 studentsSurveyInterviewed 10 studentsGPAs and Retention RatesResults of StudiesLearned that Statistics showed that Statistics showed thatHypothesis validated? What solutions were given?Categories for articles Johnson et al.
