comprehend material Beverages are allowed in class Please be mindful to take care of cups bottles etc upon dismissal Restroom breaks as needed permission not necessary However please avoid breaks during test taking Please avoid using technological devises during class including cell phones laptops ipads ipods etc Technological devises are to be stored during test times Course Objectives The student will 1 Improve reading comprehension 2 Expand vocabulary 3 Write summaries reflections demonstrating I know it seems hard sometimes understanding of reading selections but remember one thing 4 Create connection between texts and personal Through every dark night there s experiences a bright day after that 5 Combine information from several sources So no matter how hard it get stick 6 Read for pleasure and information your chest out keep ya head 7 Demonstrate the use and application of several up reading strategies including metacognitive Tupac Shakur processes These course components Citing Sources When Responding to Reading Assignments Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is when you take someone else s words Written or verbal restate them in your own words and give the person credit Plagiarism Plagiarism is the use of another person s ideas or words without giving them the proper credit Remember changing a few words here and there is still considered plagiarism even if you give the author credit When writing you can avoid plagiarism by putting a document or the text aside out of your view and restating the idea in your own words That way you won t be tempted to copy their words when your retell what s been written Quoting Stating the Author s Words Directly Sometimes when writing especially when responding to a text you ll need to directly quote what the author wrote When you copy their exact statement sentence be sure to write the author s words exactly as they appear in print and use quotation marks at the beginning and end of the author s statement Then include the author s last name and page number s Place the period after the parentheses For example the following is the first sentence from the first chapter of The Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls I was sitting in a taxi wondering if I had overdressed for the evening when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster Walls 6 Reading Assignments Responses Students will be introduced to various texts including textbook selections newspapers and magazine articles poems short stories and essays as well as a novel With these texts students will demonstrate pre reading active reading and post reading behaviors including multiple and wide ranging reading strategies and metacognitive processes Metacognition is the process of thinking about thinking or being aware of how we think and learn Students will show evidence of text to self text to text and text to world connections and will use Reading Journals Composition notebooks to record their connections and write thorough summaries and reflective responses demonstrating clear understanding of reading selections and the student s reading processes Reading Journal A Reading Journal entry will need to be completed for each reading assignment assigned both in and out of class Before beginning each reading assignment students will need to record the date in the Reading Journal and write the statement Pre Reading Initial Thoughts Then before reading the assigned text the title of the piece chapter or article should be recorded as well as any thoughts or ideas Predictions the title stimulates For example if the title of the text is Super Human or Super Sleepy students might write This article sounds like it s about the sleep habits of people who can and can t go without sleep 2 The goal is to develop and record responses and predictions as a pre reading process to encourage thoughts that will provide a structure for which to attach new information Once predictions have been recorded students will also write a purpose for their reading That is what does the reader hope or expect to learn from the text After a purpose has been recorded in the Reading Journal students will begin activelyreading recording the thoughts questions drawings charts or diagrams to facilitate understanding of the text Students are encouraged to use the following phrases to begin statements in their
