Events Leading to WWIICurrent LectureThe Great Depression- “Bull Market”: A good market going up- “Bear Market”: A market going down- 1929 US is in a bear market- Herbert Hoover does not know what to doo “Trickle Down Theory” give money to rich hoping it will trickle down to the poor (does not work)o Giving money to the lower class (poor) does work Hoover Dam provides work - US lurches to safety by electing Franklin Roosevelt in 1932o Handicappedo From a wealthy familyo People felt he is a man that knows their problemso Closed the banks, canceled prohibition, created programs like CCC, WPA, ect.o His first mistake he makes is in regards to the Supreme Court Supreme Court declares the programs unconstitutional  Roosevelt felt every Supreme Court member over the age of 70 should bereplaced People were unhappy - Germans lurch to safety by electing Adolf Hitler in 1932These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Made Hitler the Dictator of Germanyo Order of groups that gave in to the Nazi’s  1. Teachers 2. Catholic Churches 3. Pharmacists  4. Lutherans  5. Military - Military didn’t want to give into Hitler’s army (SA)- Hitler does away with his own army in order for the Military to joino 1933 Laws starting to turn against the Jews No Jewish lawyers, doctors, students Christians are benefiting o 1935 Nuremburg Blood Laws: what Jews can/can’t do o The Italians are the first to start a fight Mussolini is in charge Oct. 2nd 1935 Italians send 100,000 men to Ethiopia Want to take over Eastern Mediterranean (“Mare Mostrum”)- It’s an easy target (there's nothing there)- Perfect place to test weapons- It takes 9 months for them to get there They are the laughing stock of Europe- 1936 The Spanish Civil Waro Most important event in Europe in the 1930’so Legal Election puts left wing coalition in charge of Popular Front  Called itself the Republicans of Loyalist o Army rises up against them under General Francoo Last until 1939- turning point of the 1930so Mussolini moves his troops to Spain (Italians)o Hitler sends 70,000 troops to Spain (Nazi’s)o Nationalist win the war in 1939o Germans use winning the war as an excuse to test stuff Blitzkrieg1938- Evian meeting o Meeting in France o What should the Germans do with the “refugees”? o Nobody wants them- Munich Crisiso Sudeten Land (Bohemia)o Hitler makes a speech in Munich saying Germans are being discriminated against and if it does not stop, he will declare war (WWII)o Hitler takes over Sudeten Land - Nov. 10th and 11th German turns against the Jewso “Crystal Night” or “Night of Broken Glass”1939- March 1939 Germans invade the rest of Czechoslovakia- Joe Stalin is alarmed the Poland is starting to get involved- Stalin was paranoid and killed 80% of his own officers- Either has to come to terms with the Germans or fight themo Decides to come to terms- August 34 The Russians and Germans sign an agreement- Nazi’s – Soviet’s Allieo Exchange supplies with each othero They divide Poland between them- WWII begins September 1939- 1939 Depression starts to get better because of
