Former course prefix/number ENG 102. In this course students refine the writing, research, and reading skills introduced in English 1301. A related goal is the development of critical thinking skills. Writing assignments emphasize argumentation and persuasion. Students will also write a formal research paper. (3 Lec.) Coordinating Board Academic Approval Number 2304015135Course Prerequisites: Prerequisite: English 1301 and TASP/Alternative Assessment Standard in Reading and Writing must be met. Course Objectives/ Learning Outcomes: English 1302 addresses the following educational objectives: To understand and demonstrate writing and speaking processes through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation. To understand the importance of specifying audience and purpose and to select appropriate communication choices. To understand and appropriately apply modes of expression, i.e. descriptive, expositive, narrative, scientific, and self-expressive, in written, visual, and oral communication. To participate effectively in groups with emphasis on listening, critical and reflective thinking, and responding. To understand and apply basic principles of critical thinking, problem solving, and technical proficiency in the development of exposition and argument. To develop the ability to research and write a documented paper and/or to give an oral presentation. English 1302 addresses the following intellectual competencies: Reading: The ability to analyze and interpret a variety of printed materials—books, documents, and articles—above 12th grade level. Writing: The ability to produce clear, correct and coherent prose adapted to purpose, occasion and audience—above 12th grade level. Critical Thinking: Think and analyze at a critical level. Computer Literacy: Understand our technological society; use computer based technology in communication. Course Outline: Last Day to Withdraw with “W” (Drop Date): Saturday, October 8Holidays: Holidays: - Labor Day Holiday - September 3 at 4 p.m. - Sept. 6 at 6 a.m. - Thanksgiving Holiday - Nov. 24 at 12 a.m. - Nov. 28 at 6 a.m. - Winter Break - Dec. 23, 2011 at 5 p.m. - Jan. 3, 2012 at 6 a.m. For complete information on reading and writing assignments, see the information within the Learning Units on the course eCampus web site. Due dates are subject to change with appropriate notice to students via Announcement and/or e-mail. Late Policy: Only Final Drafts of essays may be submitted late with a penalty of one letter-grade per day late, with a maximum of four days late (four letter-grades). (Note: For this class, the Final Draft of Essay 4 is due on the last day of class. Therefore, it may not be submitted late.) Exceptions may be made in extreme situations when prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Documentation may be required. Keeping up in an online class is critical to success. Once you miss one assignment, it is easy for late work to pile up. Therefore, it is best to keep moving forward. If you miss an assignment, you may be able to submit it during make-up week. Some assignments can be done for half credit during make-up week. For more information, see below the Assignment Calendar. Please manage your time in the best possible way. You’ll find several assignments due on one day, but this does not mean you should wait to do those assignments on that day. Instead, decide when it is best for you to do them, pacing yourself whenever possible (completing an assignment a day instead of all in one day, for example).
