1Psychology 611 LabFALL 2006Instructor: Susan HanOffice: David King 2064Office Hours: M 10:30am-12:30pm and by appointmentE-mail: [email protected] Location: Innovation Hall 319Class Section 203/Date/Time: Monday 6:00pm-7:50pmClass Section 204/Date/Time: Monday 8:00pm-9:50pmClass website: http://mres.gmu.edu/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/611LabObjectivesWhether you want to be here or not you are in fact in a lab for a statistics course. All the TA’s have allbeen in the position you are in now. Hopefully, you will come to see the importance of statistics in thepsychology as we have. The three goals for the lab are simple:1. Conduct statistical analyses2. Increase statistical comprehension3. Reduce your fear of statisticsStructureApplicationThe first half of lab will be spent conducting analyses. Every lab you and a partner (of our choosing)will conduct an analysis. Then by yourself, you will write-up the intention of the analysis, analysisresults, and your interpretation of the analysis results. The write-up is due within 24 hours.DiscussionThe second half of the 6:00-7:50pm lab will be a group discussion. This 7:00-7:50pm time periodis the only discussion section. If you are in the later lab and want to attend the discussion, show upto the lab at 7:00pm. Any Ph.D. students in the Monday labs must be registered for the 6:00-7:50pmlabs. The discussion will emanate from the lab readings (found on the website). This half of the lab isfor all interested persons but only the Ph.D. students are required to attend. All students that attend thediscussion must complete the readings before lab.Lab Report Criteria1. Analysis Intention2. APA Formatted Results3. Analysis InterpretationNameYour name, G-number, and section number need to be at the top of the lab report.2Analysis IntentionStart your write-up by detailing the reasoning for the analysis. The research question and variabletype often drive the analysis selection. Variable identification and description should be included in youranalysis selection explanation.APA Formatted ResultsFollow-up the analysis intent section with an APA formatted results section. The Publication Man-ual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition) contains very regimented instructions forpublishing analysis results. Write a results paragraph following the APA guidelines. We may requireadditional information depending on the particular analysis, you will be notified in lab.Analysis InterpretationIn your final section, you must explain to us what the analysis output means. This must be a com-prehensive explanation of every aspect of the output including: The inferences you can make based onthe data and the results, include how the variable type and relevant aspects of the output influence yourinterpretation. We are being intentionally vague so to provoke you to consider the many assumptions andrequirements of any analysis.AttendanceThe lab is where you will learn what analysis you must conduct. If you miss the lab it is your respon-sibility to ask your lab partner what work you need to perform. Your absence may cause undue pressurefor your partner, thus it will be greatly beneficial if you attend lab and is likely to be detrimental to yourgrade if you do not. You cannot switch labs.ReadingsRead the assigned lecture readings before lab. Read and view the relevant statistical analysis tutorialsBEFORE lab. All additional readings are required for the Ph.D. students and optional for everyone else. These additional readings are available on the lab website.GradingThere will be an analysis to run every lab meeting. Your write-ups will be graded as com-plete/incomplete not for correctness. All work is due within 24 hours of the lab. We will make correctionsand return your work. Late work will be corrected but you will not receive credit for the write-up. Youmay have to conduct additional analyses that are not listed on the syllabus. The discussion section of the lab is required only for the Ph.D. students and your participation willaffect your grade. Participation will also be a binary score for each lab. You will either be judged to haveread the material and contributed to the discussion or not. The discussion section only effects the Ph.D.students grades.Your score is based upon simply dividing the amount of points you received by the total amount possi-ble.Statistical ProgramThe default package is SPSS, but consult your advisor to determine what package would work best foryou.3Tentative ScheduleThe schedule is subject to change.Lab:Date Topic Out of Lab Worklab1: 8/28 Introduction Find a statistical programlab2: 9/4 No Lab Meeting Ethics Readingslab3: 9/11 Methodology no out of lab work9/12 last day to add classeslab4: 9/18 Methodology write-up 1lab5: 9/25 Basic analyses write-up 29/29 last day to drop classeslab6: 10/2 Basic analyses write-up 3lab7: 10/9 COLUMBUS DAY BUMP NO LABlab8: 10/16 Bivariate write-up 4lab9: 10/23 Data Management write-up 5lab10: 10/30 Data Management write-up 6lab11: 11/6 MRC write-up 7lab12: 11/13 MRC write-up 8lab13: 11/20 ANCOVA/MANCOVA write-up 9lab14: 11/27 Repeated Measures write-up 1012/1 lit. review due to advisorlab13: 12/4 Adv.
