EASTFIELD COLLEGE OF THE DCCCD ARTS, LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, G138 (972) 860-7124 PROFESSOR: MICHAEL MOORHEAD Fall, 2011 OFFICE: L323 PHONE: (972) 860-7048 E-MAIL: [email protected] OFFICE HOURS: 7:00-8:00 a.m. MWF 9:15-10:00 a.m. MWF BY APPOINTMENT SYLLABUS FOR ENGLISH 1301 (4001,4009) Text: Wall Street Journal DCCCD Catalog Course Description: Prerequisite: One of the following must be met: (1) Developmental Reading 0093 and Developmental Writing 0093; (2) English as a Second Language; or (3) have met TASP or Alternative Assessment Reading and Writing Standards. This course focuses on student writing. It emphasizes reading and analytical thinking and introduces research skills. Students practice writing for a variety of audiences and purposes. Required Writings: Pre-Course Exercise: 1. Personal Letter Wall Street Journal Reaction 2. Dialogue YOU MUST WRITE A MINI- 3. Case History MUM OF 4 ACCEPTABLE 4. Childhood Event WSJ REACTIONS TO PASS 5. Description THE COURSE NO MATTER 6. Process WHAT YOUR GRADES ARE 7. Comparison/Contrast OTHERWISE; TURN THESE 8. Argument IN AT A RATE OF NO MORE 9. Analysis/Critical Evaluation THAN 1 PER WEEK…EACH IS 10. In-class writing WORTH ½ POINT. *Note: If a student cannot write well enough to get a passing grade on #10, the student fails, regardless of all other course grades. To pass the course, you must complete 8 writings with a grade of 6 or better in each (only 8 grades will count toward the final grade; if 9 writings are submitted, the one with the lowest grade will be dropped); the grading scale for passing grades in the course is as follows:2 A = 73 points 10 = Super A B = 65 points 9 = A C = 57 points 8 = B D = 51 points 7 = C 6 = D X= Unsatisfactory work; no credit All papers may be worked on, slaved over, proofread, and rewritten many times; all papers submitted for grading must have been shown to me at least once prior to submission for grading and must be word processed. Good writing requires thinking, planning, editing and revising; therefore, you are encouraged to work as carefully as you can on every phase of every paper you submit for a grade. There are no deadlines or due dates for papers. You must work out your own regular schedule; however, no more than 1 paper a week may be submitted for grading (none the last week of the semester). The papers, with the exception of the in-class writing, may be done in any order you prefer; I will discuss the required writings with you throughout the semester. Papers will be evaluated on the degree to which they meet the following criteria: 1. An abundance of vivid, pertinent specifics 2. An ability to interest and involve the reader 3. Firmness and direction 4. Purpose and organization 5. Mechanical soundness...to include proper spelling, sentence sense, tense, and any other area of grammatical usage. English 1301 Writing Objectives/Reminders: Remember and value your life experiences. Be willing to tell your story. Be able to shape your story a variety of ways in a variety of modes. See the necessity of revising and improving the presentation of your story. Do the slow, hard work of revision…be patient with yourself and with your story. Learn the rules of grammar and mechanics and apply them in this improving process. Monday / Wednesday attendance is mandatory; Friday lab attendance is optional. Attend lab as often as you need to in order to do as well in the course as you want to or can. After two absences on Monday or Wednesday, I will deduct 2 points from your final course total for each succeeding absence.3 ENGLISH 1301 Assignments Specifics…. I. Personal Letter (a couple of pages) – 1) To someone in another city 2) Relaxed style yet grammatically correct 3) Abundance of detail 4) 2 copies 5) Stamped, addressed envelope (legal size) 6) Do quickly so your information doesn’t become dated II. Dialogue – 1) Have at least 3 speakers 2) Have one continuous setting 3) Use no quotation mark or “he saids” 4) Write at least 2 full pages 5) Be careful to reproduce real speech III. Case History – 1) Choose a recent event that strongly affected you 2) Jot down facts about the event – to cover only a few minutes 3) Tell your story (event) full, drawing the reader into your action 4) Remember this is a story with you as the main character 5) Have a point/direction to your narrative (story) 6) Be thorough and detailed and specific – be sure a reader knows what you are doing and feeling IV. Childhood Event – 1) Choose an event from your grade school years that strongly affected you 2) Follow the guidelines for a case history 3) Write in the present tense, as if the past event were happening to you now V. Description – 1) Choose someone you know 2) Jot down facts about this person 3) Pick a dominant impression and build your paper around it…use the circular approach 4) Support dominant impression with specific details 5) Appeal to reader’s senses 6) Leave the reader with the feeling of “knowing” the person described4 VI. Process – (How to)— 1) Choose or decide upon an area of expertise 2) Jot down facts or “truths” about this area 3) Find some procedure or job or “process” in the area 4) Explain the process (and your choice of it)…step by step 5) Be certain of your organization 6) Work for “flow”…avoid the abrupt; don’t let the paper sound like a recipe VII. Comparison – Contrast 1) Choose 2 anythings 2) Have an effective introduction (details later) 3) Use the “alternating” technique 4) A paper of comparison or contract or Both 5) Have an abundance of specifics VIII. Argument – 1) Main point is to convince, persuade, change a reader’s mind 2) Write about what you know and truly believe – no research 3) Use the specific first-hand examples in your proof 4) Carefully organize your evidence – have at least three pieces 5) Be able to phrase the point being argued in one sentence 6) Establish in the introduction a “need” for the argument – why you are interested in it IX. Analysis/Critical Evaluation 1) Identify what you are analyzing 2) Include your likes with an explanation 3) Include your
