THE GENERAL OUTLINE OF RICK KUSHMAN’SREVIEW OF THE NEW DISNEY “CINDERELLA”THESIS: I believe that the new Disney remake of Cinderella failsin its attempt to present enlightened and new messages.BACKGROUNDKushman shows that the Disney producers intended to present certainenlightened messages that were not in the original and they also wantedto change some of the old messages that they considered harmful.Kushman also says that not all of their attempts failed. For example, theywanted to give the film a new look from an ethnic point of view and hesays they succeeded in this area.ARGUMENT 1: I believe that the new Disney Cinderella fails in itsattempt to present enlightened messages because many of itsmessages are contradictory.*SUB-ARGUMENT 1. The producers claim that they wanted topresent a specific set of enlightened messages in the film, but Ibelieve that a number of points made by the film contradict thesemessages.SUB-ARGUMENT 2. I also believe the film also contradicts itself inother ways.[THESE TWO ARGUMENTS MAY LOOK SIMILAR BUT THEY ARELOGICALLY SEPARATE. THE FIRST HAS TO DO WITH MESSAGESPRESENTED IN THE FILM THAT CONTRADICT WHAT THEPRODUCERS SAID THEY WANTED THE FILM TO SAY. THE SECONDREFERS TO CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS WITHIN THE FILMITSELF. FOR EXAMPLE, KUSHMAN POINTS OUT THE PRINCECONTRADICTS HIMSELF.]2[*IN ARGUMENT 1, KUSHMAN ASSUMES THAT IF HE CAN SHOW THAT THESTATEMENTS MADE BY THE PRODUCERS CONTRADICT WHAT THEY‘SAY’ IN THE FILM OR IF THE FILM ITSELF MAKES CONTRADICTORYSTATEMENTS, THEN HE HAS THE LOGICAL RIGHT TO CALL THE TRUTHOR VALIDITY OF THESE STATEMENTS INTO QUESTION. THIS IS ALSOONE OF THE PRIMARY ASSUMPTIONS OF OUR CT MODEL.]ARGUMENT 2: I believe the film fails to present new messagesbecause some of the same old messages still remain in this new and“updated” production.[ARGUMENTS ONE AND TWO MAY LOOK SIMILAR, BUT THEY ARELOGICALLY SEPARATE. THE FIRST HAS TO DO WITH MESSAGESTHAT EXPRESS THE VALUES OF THE 1990S, E.G., THEEMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN. THE SECOND HAS TO DO WITHIDEAS THAT WERE PRESENT IN THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS OFCINDERELLA THAT WERE NOT CHANGED AS PROMISED, E.G., THEEQUATION OF A WOMAN’S BEAUTY WITH HER MORAL GOODNESSAND THE LIMITATIONS ON WOMEN’S ROLES.EVEN THOUGH KUSHMAN WAS ONLY WRITING A REVIEW OF ACHILDREN’S FILM THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN THE SCENE SECTION OF THESUNDAY SACRAMENTO BEE, YOU CAN SEE THAT HIS ARGUMENT ISFAIRLY SOPHISTICATED.AT THE SAME TIME, IT IS NOT “PERFECT” AND COULD HAVE BEEN MUCHCLEARER IN A NUMBER OF AREAS. NOTE THAT WE HAD TO REARRANGEOR TWEAK THIS OUTLINE IN SEVERAL PLACES TO MAKE HISORGANIZATION EASIER TO FOLLOW.ON THE OTHER HAND, THOUGH WE HAVE NOT MENTIONED ANY OF HISEXAMPLES, THEY HELP GIVE HIS ARGUMENTS CREDIBILITY BECAUSETHEY ARE ALL FAIRLY SPECIFIC AND CAN BE CHECKED FOR
