GENERAL AIMS OF THE COURSE: English 098 is a semester long pre-baccalaureate course for students who score 142-150 on the California State University English Placement Test Composition or receive credit in English 097. While both developmental courses English 097 and 098 stress reading and writing, English 098 is designed primarily to improve students’ abilities to write in the kinds of genres they will use in their academic careers and beyond. The course should give students many opportunities to write in ways that challenge them; they should also have many opportunities to discuss their writing with peer groups, and with the class as a whole. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS COURSE:  Students will demonstrate competence in the recursive writing process, using strategies for invention, drafting, and revision.  Students will demonstrate their understanding that writing in an academic context means exploring a subject, distinguishing their own ideas from the ideas of others, and organizing information around a central focus. Students will demonstrate developing facility in various genres of writing, including timed writing, personal writing, journal writing, text-based writing, and argument, developing rhetorical strategies appropriate to audience and purpose.  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of critical reading strategies and apply them to both print and visual texts.  Students will demonstrate developing competency in organizational patterns, sentence structure, and the basic usage and mechanical practices of Edited American English.  Students will demonstrate their developing understanding of how to use writing and reading as a means of participating in the world around them. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Plagiarism is an example of academic dishonesty. In any assignment, words and/or ideas that are not your own need to be correctly documented, otherwise it is considered plagiarism. Plagiarism carries serious consequences, which may include failing the course. In class, we will be reviewing ways to cite sources in order to avoid plagiarism; however, I encourage you to meet with me if you are uncertain about whether your writing could be misconstrued as plagiarism.2 PASSING THE CLASS English 098 is a Credit/No Credit course. Receiving CREDIT in English 098 will require the following:  Maintaining a C average  Turning in all 3 major writing projects  Submitting and passing the final portfolio GRADING  60% of your grade will be based on 1000 points worth of work which will be evaluated on a credit/no credit basis. As long as you meet the minimum requirement for each project, you will receive credit for your work. Instead of assigning a grade, the emphasis will be on evaluating your work through feedback and encouraging you to revise based on the feedback.  40% will be based on your participation in the class and in your groups. This will be graded. An “A” will earn you 100 points, a “B” 85 points, a “C” 75 points, and a “D” 65 points. An “F” will not receive any credit. o Individual participation will be evaluated on the quality of your participation in class and in your groups. In addition to completing individual work such as journal entries, texting the text and other less formal projects, you will be evaluated on how well you work within your group. This means participating as well as yielding the floor to others. It also refers to showing up for group presentations and the quality of your contributions to the group. o Regular attendance is the basis for strong participation and performance in class and in your work. If you miss 3 classes, I will ask you to meet with me in my office. If you miss 6 classes, you will receive an “F” for your participation grade.  The combined total of work and participation grades needs to be 75% in order to be able to turn in your portfolio. The portfolio will include: o 1 Portfolio Preface o 1 in-class timed essay (unrevised) o 3 papers (revised) including the writing assignments LATE AND MISSED WORK: THE LIFELINE!!! You receive one Life Line. Use it to turn in one late paper. Write “Life Line” at the top of the late paper and turn in by the next class. Late papers are otherwise docked 20 points per class. I do not accept any other late work, do not allow make-ups of in-class essays, and do not allow anything to be turned in by email. ATTENDANCE AND APPROPRIATE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR  I expect students to attend class regularly. If you miss 3 classes, I will ask you to meet with me in my office. If you miss a total of 6 classes, you will receive an “F” for your participation grade.  I expect students to arrive on time. If you arrive late, please walk in quietly and sit in the nearest desk so you do not disrupt the class. Come up to my desk after class so that I may change your absence to a tardy.  I expect students to be prepared for each class. This means you need to come to class having done any assigned readings or projects and be prepared to participate in any number of ways—for example, by contributing to class discussion, taking notes, and paying attention to what’s going on in the class.  I expect students to remain in class for the duration of the class. This means avoiding leaving and returning in the middle of class, unless it is an emergency. Phone calls and bathroom breaks should be taken care of before class begins.  I expect one person to talk one at a time during discussions. Please refrain from holding side conversations.  I expect students to pay attention during class. This means keeping your desk clear of newspapers, magazines, food, cell
