David Gustafson Contact Information: 1► Overview of Requirements for Successful Completion of MTH 110: PrealgebraPART 1: There are three competency exams (integers, fractions, decimals). You may use no notes and no calculators on the competency exams. All students MUST pass all competency topics. Any student who does not pass all competency exams will receive a 0.0 for his/her course grade, regardless of grades received on other required work. For more information about the competency exams refer to page 3 of the syllabus.PART 2: Students must successfully complete required coursework in addition to the competency exams. Your grade will depend on your success on required coursework. 2► Course Outcomes: Students will be able to do:Arithmetic of fractions.Arithmetic of decimals.Mathematics of ratio/proportion/percentage.Mathematics of geometry/measurement. Graphs/statistics/signed number arithmetic.Algebraic operations/linear equations.Students will be able to use appropriate technology as part of their completion of course objectives.The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. The Associate Degree Outcomes are addressed in this class:ADO 3. Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of studyADO 4. Critical thinking and problem-solvingNOTE: This course does not meet the mathematics requirements for graduation from JCC. 3► Course Topics and Assigned Homework See Class Calendar for timeline of topics covered and exams. To help you learn it is recommended that you read the textbook, work through the examples, attend class regularly, participate in class discussions,do assignments,and form a study group with other students in the class. 4► Course Requirements and Grading System – based on 1000 points Requirements Points Percent of GradeExams**: Four exams at 150 points or 15% each.You may use one side of an 8 1/2 “ by 11” sheet of paper for notes and a scientific calculator. 600 60%Final Exam You may use one side of an 8 1/2 “ by 11” sheet of paper for notes and a scientific calculator. 200 20%Homework, Attendance and Participation 200 20%TOTAL 1000 100% About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra creditnot be offered in mathematics courses. In order to foster a collegiate environment,maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement andadvancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the bestinterests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to include bonus points ona test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providingopportunities for more than 100% credit.” Exams**: If you must miss a test, contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. It is important to attend class regularly to be sure you are up to date on these revisions. Homework, Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation in class is very important. Please notify me immediately if you are unable to be at an exam. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given. Competency exams must be completed by the deadline on the calendar. Instructor will supply late work policies for homework and attendance. 7► Participation Grade To comply with Federal Regulations, I am to grade you after about two weeks, five weeks and eight weeks from the start of the course.These grades are letter grades (V-verifies that you are participating, H-means that you are participating but your work is not acceptable and need help to be successful, or Q-means that you have not participated and have really quit) that do not count toward your gpa. If you receive a Q, you are withdrawn from the course. After midterm I can no longer drop you from the course. IF you want to withdraw, you will need to do it yourself. 8► Available HelpTutors (plus additional services for academic success) can be accessed by calling 796-8415 or by stopping by the Center for Student Success, Bert Walker Hall Room 123Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning. 9► Other General Information - Instructional Philosophy: Education is a self-initiated, active, goal-directed process, leading to a change and/or expansion of the students understanding of and ability to use the subject material. The student is expected to be accountable for the learning process. The instructor should be viewed as a facilitator and resource person to assist in the process. - Academic Honesty: (Excerpt from JCC policy: contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.) Academic Honesty is expected of allstudents. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to doso. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself. - Audits: Must be registered during the first week of class. You will not receive a grade or credit for the course. - Withdraw deadline for this semester is _________.
