The index of Economic Freedom is at http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/Last year’s suggested sources included the following websites. http://www.finfacts.com/biz10/globalworldincomepercapita.htmhttps://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.htmlhttp://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/DATASTATISTICS/0,,contentMDK:20535285~menuPK:1192694~pagePK:64133150~piPK:64133175~theSitePK:239419,00.htmlhttp://www.carleton.ca/cifp/But just by wandering around the clippings on my website I found many other potential sources. Possible credit is 2 to 7 points depending on effort and originality. Recently the Heritage Foundation produced the graph below. What I want to know is if you can develop an equation relating per capita income (the dependent variable) and Economic freedom x. Because it is pretty obvious that a straight line won’t work, you will probably need to create a 2x variable too. (The instruction for getting a squared version of the variable in C3 into C4 would be ‘let C4 = C3 * C3’). But I would like to know what parts of ‘economic freedom’ affect per capita income. Your dependent variable is per capita income. You should probably use a sample of no more than 50 countries and it’s up to you what variables to use, but you should work up to at least 3 independent variables. You are, of course, looking for significant coefficients and high R-squares. For instructions on how to do a regression, try the material in Doing a Regression and in the problem solution suggested there. See also the first question on last year’s final exam. (The instruction for getting a squared version of the variable in C3 into C4 would be ‘let C4 = C3 * C3.) I expect some commentary, using R-squares and significance, on what independent variables are good predictors. Since your dependent variable is per capita income, avoid independent variables that are parts of total income. The index of Economic Freedom is at http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/Last year’s suggested sources included the following websites. http://www.finfacts.com/biz10/globalworldincomepercapita.htmhttps://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html252CP406 12/2/2006http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/DATASTATISTICS/0,,contentMDK:20535285~menuPK:1192694~pagePK:64133150~piPK:64133175~theSitePK:239419,00.htmlhttp://www.carleton.ca/cifp/But just by wandering around the clippings on my website I found many other potential sources.
