GeochemistryGeology 480Fall 2005MWF 9:10-10:00Thornton Hall, room 618Instructor contact informationDr. Mary LeechThornton Hall, room 515 — Tel: 415-338-1144E-mail: [email protected] hours: Tues. 11:00-12:00, Weds. 10:00-11:00, by appt., or if my office door is openOBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSEGeochemistry is a vast scientific field that includes many different potential topics for study.This course will cover broad base of geochemistry beginning with the fundamentals and spanboth low- and high-temperature geochemistry theory and applications. The goal of this course isto prepare you with the basic knowledge and skills to tackle other geochemistry problems youwill encounter in the future.COURSE SCHEDULEThe course schedule of lecture topics and reading assignments is subject to change. I may chooseto change aspects of the course based on student interests and to adjust the course workload. Iwill announce any changes in class and changes will be posted immediately to the course website. While I will attempt to keep changes to a minimum, you should check the course web sitefor the most current information. However, deadlines WILL NOT change.ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATIONAttendance is critical to your success in this class. The problems we discuss and solve in classwill be essential to your learning and there will be material we discuss in class that will not showup on the lecture slides or on the assignments. I expect all students to actively participate in class— ask questions, contribute to discussions, work with other students.DISABILITY PROGRAMS AND RESOURCE CENTER — Reasonable accommodationswill be made for any students with disabilities; speak with the instructor directly.PROBLEM SETSI have scheduled every Wednesday of class as a period to review completed problem sets andintroduce then begin new problem sets. You may work individually or in pairs on theseassignments. While I encourage you to work with each other, it is critical that you complete andturn in your own work. These are an important component of the class and account for half ofyour grade. For the problem sets and the final exam, you must show your work — writing outequations, etc. (with units) will help you to catch errors and helps me to see that you understandthe problems.GROUP PROJECTYou will complete a group project based on published scientific papers on a topic of your (oryour group’s) choice; graduate students may complete this project individually. Details will bedistributed during the second week of classes.Fall 2005 Geochemistry San Francisco State UniversityTAKE-HOME FINAL EXAMThe only exam in this course is a take-home final exam that you will have over a week tocomplete. Any course notes, texts, scientific papers may be used to complete the final exam, butyou may not consult any person nor work with any other student on the final exam — all workmust be yours and yours alone.MISSED CLASSES AND LATE WORK POLICYPlease let me know before class if you will miss class, be late, or need to leave early — call orsend an e-mail before class.I will not accept ANY late work for the problem sets. You have a full class period and a fullweek to complete these assignments. If you turn any of problem sets late, I will check your work,but you will not receive any points for the problem set. I have a strict policy on this because Iwill post solutions to the problems as soon as these assignments are turned in on the due date.ACADEMIC HONESTYBecause you will inevitably work with other students on the problems sets, you must take extracare to complete and turn in your own work. If I find that two assignments are identical or nearlyidentical, I will not give credit for either assignment. We will rely heavily on this text and it is important for you to bring your text toclass each day. I suggest you complete the reading for each lecture before you come to class.
