ISBN – 10: 1412964245 ISBN – 13: 978-1412964241 Course Description: This course surveys the major theories of career choice, planning, and development as well as standardized methods of assessing vocational interests and aptitudes in school settings. Social, psychological, and economic factors influencing career choice are examined. Emphasis will be placed on individual and group career counseling skills across diverse populations. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand career development theories and decision-making models, and career, vocational, educational, occupational and labor market information resources, and career information systems to assist students in developing employability skills and technological opportunities.2. Develop and implement strategies and activities for preparing all students to develop employment skills for a full range of postsecondary options and opportunities. 3. Understand career development program planning, organization, implementation, administration, and evaluation. 4. Understand career and educational planning, placement, follow-up, and evaluation and assessment instruments and techniques relevant to career planning and decision making. 5. Understand career counseling processes, techniques, and resources, including those applicable to specific populations in a global economy. 6. Understand the advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity and success for clients. 7. Understand interrelationships among and between work, family, and other life roles and factors, including the role of multicultural issues in career development. 8. Understand the ethical standards of professional organizations and the application of ethical and legal considerations in professional counseling. 9. Understand the qualities, principles, skills, and styles of effective leadership. 10.Develop counseling skills in helping clients with depression and other psychopathology related to school stress and work-related problems. Calendar of Assignments: By 6:00 PM on Friday evening of the first weekend session, the graduate student should have read and be prepared to discuss chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 of the textbook. By 6:00 PM on Friday of the second weekend session, the student should have read and be prepared to discuss chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, & 11 of the text. Note that additional reading assignments from other sources will assigned in class. Role-play and other exercises will be conducted during class time. These exercises are an important part of this course. At 6:00 PM on Friday of the second weekend session, the graduate student will hand in a term paper. He/She will give an oral synopsis of the paper to the rest of the class on the Saturday of the second weekend session. On Sunday afternoon of the first weekend session, the student will take a midterm exam. On Sunday afternoon of the second weekend session, the student will take a final exam. Description of Written Assignments: The term paper should be type-written, double-spaced, and between 7 and 10 pages long. It may be on any topic related to career development or career counseling. At least four professional references are required. APA style is suggested but not required.The student will present a 5 to 10 minute, oral synopsis of his/her paper to the rest of the class. A one page handout to the class is suggested. The midterm exam will consist of a multiple-choice section (closed-book and closed-notes) and an essay section (open-book and open-notes). Similarly, the final exam will consist of a multiple-choice section (closed-book and closed-notes) and an essay section (open book and notes). The final exam will not be cumulative from the first weekend session. Grading Criteria: A = 90 - 100 25% - Midterm Exam B = 80 - 89 25% - Final Exam C = 70 – 79 25% - Term Paper and Oral Synopsis F = Below 70 25% - Class Participation and Exercises ____ 100% - Total Attendance: Attendance at all class sessions is required. Missing class time may result in a significant reduction in the student’s course grade. Please contact the instructor as soon as possible if you anticipate missing any class time.
