Box 942732 Sacramento, CA 94234-7320 ABSTRACT This report provides summary data on the number of fee-for-service Medi-Cal funded abortions performed during 2002, the type of facility where a procedure was performed, and Medi-Cal expenditures for these procedures. Only abortion claims received and processed for date-of-service January through December 2002 are included in this report. The term fee-for-service (FFS) used throughout this report refers to these claims. The data are presented at both county and state levels. Estimates of abortions for enrollees in Health Care Plans (HCP) are included since encounter data are not yet available. A distribution by county is provided. March 2004Medi-Cal Funded Induced Abortions 2002 iii State of California Department of Health Services March 2004 HIGHLIGHTS · Medi-Cal funded a total of 53,905 fee-for-service (FFS) 1 abortions 2 in 2002 and paid an average of $364 per procedure, totaling $19,619,900 for all abortions. There were an estimated 36,135 abortions for enrollees in HCPs, excluding San Mateo and Santa Barbara, which have been submitting encounter claims for several years and are included with FFS in this report. · The average monthly rate of abortions per 1,000 FFS eligible women aged 15-44 years was 6.09. · Just over one-third, 34 percent, of Medi-Cal funded abortions were performed for women 20-24 years old. · Race/ethnicity was not reported for 36 percent of the women receiving a Medi-Cal fee-for-service funded abortion. Abortion services to Hispanic females accounted for 30 percent of total FFS abortions, while White women were the second largest group at 20 percent. · The “Families” aid category received the largest number of abortions, representing 33 percent of the total. The second largest group was the “Presumptive Eligible” category at 20%. The undocumented alien eligible women were 16 percent of FFS abortions, down from 17 percent in the previous year. · Over half of the abortions, 52 percent, were done at a physician’s office, averaging 34 abortions per office location. · The cost of an abortion performed on a hospital inpatient basis averaged $2,775 per abortion. Abortions done at a physician’s office averaged $327 per abortion, and clinics had the lowest average cost, $321. · The number of Medi-Cal eligible women who received abortion services was 51,551, a seven percent increase above calendar year 2001.
